Why couldn't they have just kept Obsidian? They are doing away with the established history of DC anyways... Obsidian could have different parents.

Why didn't they just make Hal Jordan gay?  Then everything would be fine for Alan Scott, Obsidian, Jade AND Carol Ferris.

One important thing to keep in mind with making a pre-established character gay. Outside of a reboot, you're not just making that character gay — you're declaring that they were in the closet the whole time in past stories, and that any depicted relationships with women were an attempt at self-suppression.

Talk about a retcon!

Obsidian was the very rare character for whom this could really work out quite well.  And my understanding is that Roy Thomas was okay with it, too, saying that it was not his original intention but it also didn't go against the character, either.

And now he's rebooted out of existence, and the new version of Alan Scott is gay instead.  Oh well, we still have all our back issues.

They covered this topic on TMZ tonight.
They played it for laughs of course, but I was surprised that they had one guy on there that knew a bit about comics and tried to explain the messy Earth-1 Earth-2/ different universes stuff.
ugh.

It's ironic(!) because Dan Didio got his start on a cartoon called 'REBOOT'. He was story editor and came onto the show in it's third season, making the plotlines and characters darker and edgier.

No I'm not kidding!

But then they couldn't have been "surprised" by all this media attention!

He also completely changed the original ending (as he told me himself) when fans online guessed where they were going with it.

Hm. Letting the fans control the content. THAT sounds like a good idea!

Regarding Eric's statement, I don't think that the character in this case can be said to have been closeted since his appearance in the nu52 "Earth 2" #1 is his first appearance ever.

He's based on the original Alan Scott, to be sure, but he doesn't share one trait in common with him aside from power set, hair color, and left-handedness. Their ages are different. Their social lives, the era in which they live, the nature of who they are, who their friends are...

This isn't a "reveal" about Alan Scott. It's a new Alan Scott altogether, just as slacker loser Jay Garrick is new and the Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman we met briefly in issue one are entirely different from their previous Earth-2 incarnations. The origins and histories of the Power Girl and Huntress of the nu52 E-2 are radically changed as well.

This change in Alan Scott reveals nothing more about the original character's history than the "reveal" of the MOS Krypton "revealed" that Jor-El was an eyebrow-less cross-dresser going all the way back to the 30's.

Ha!

Unfortunately, with the Grant Morrison GN that bumped the new E-3 into the number 2 spot, and the E-2 that Power Girl supposedly came from, and the one that she found in a JSA annual which turned out to be close, but not quite her homeworld, and the Hypertime reveal that all the parallel Earths still existed somewhere, and the later development that a small number of parallel worlds were still extant in "our" reality, a version of E-2 being amongst them (since Mr. Mind however had "eaten" aspects of this new new E-2, it was a "simpler" place, similar but different from any E-2 we'd yet seen...) ... Yeesh.

I think we're up to Earth 2.8 or something at this point...
