I'm not sure if somebody already pointed this out, but making Alan Scott gay wouldn't really increase the number of DC's gay characters, since it most likely means his gay son Obsidian will never exist.

What will happen with Jade and Obsidian on that Universe?

Basically, then, they are doing it with a character who doesn't MATTER. As Fred notes, this is Alan in name only. Hardly any vestige of the Golden Age character left.

In a funny sort of way, I'm reminded of Marvel's LIVING MUMMY series. They made the lead character Black -- except he was a rotting corpse wrapped in bandages from top to toe, so being Black didn't really MATTER.

Much the same with Spawn, really.

I think it matters.  It shows absolutely no respect for what came before.  The Golden Age characters should be shown respect.

Look what they have done to Steve Ditko's characters. Particularly The Question.  Denny O'Neil attacked Ditko's politics using The Question, imo.  It was as if he was using The Question as a representation of Ditko, and then did everything he could to marginalize Ditko's vision of the character and political views.  Extremely low class on Denny's part.

Anymore it's more important to make a political statement and be patted on the head while being the pivot-man in a left handed circle jerk than making a viable character that will sell.

Here's Alan Scott's new costume. Personally I think the design is a lot stronger than any of his previous costumes.

I said that the CHARACTER doesn't matter, not what they're DOING with the character.

And, let's face it, the Golden Age characters -- excluding Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman -- haven't mattered up at DC for a LONG time. We're talking about people running the shop whose "golden age" was February.

And now people here at work are wondering why I'm sitting at my desk laughing loudly.

This is my crotch belt? Check!

Uncomfortable looking collar? Check!

Bizarre, immobilizing epaulets? Check!

Immobilizing wristbands? Check!

Looks like every other Nu52 costume.

Too true! I found myself thinking about this just the other day -- and the Masters like Gil Kane and Carmine Infantino, whose designs always played TO the lines of the body (male or female) not AGAINST them.

This is just another of those things that has guaranteed the success of some artists, of course -- they demonstrate to wannabe fans that, no, a good sense of design is NOT necessary in order to draw comics. (Along with those other things that are not necessary, like professionalism.)

Whilst this may not apply to a Green Lantern, it does strike me funny that superheroes used to just need to know how to sew to make their costumes. Now it seems they must know how to sculpt and cast in a variety of mediums, from plastics to metals, to produce their costumes.

When do these guys find the time to fight crime?
