"It was a dark and stormy night" doesn't originate with Snoopy.

A Victorian novelist by the name of Edward Bulwer-Lytton used it as the opening phrase of his novel PAUL CLIFFORD, and ever since it has been the automatic shorthand for overblown, purple prose.

There is even a Bulwer-Lytton competition, challenging writers to outdo the source.
