I picked up this piece of art recently

and eagle-eyed Chris Cottrill noticed a hidden message at the top of the page:

THANX JOHN A BYRNE ROBOT

I'd love to hear any recollections you have of this!

Very cool, Lloyd!  I've had this issue for decades but never noticed this!  The cover is dated Sept 1977, so while JB was already established in the biz, it's still months before his first X-Men issue and a big rise in his fame.

Geez what a catch. Nice art piece too. I always liked the K Kid when I was a kid. Funny that the first Superboy and the Legion comic I ever picked up was #234.

First time I've seen it! That was not a series to which I paid any attention, as well you can imagine!

Here's a bit of trivia for you, tho: checking the issue on the Grand Comicbook Data Base, I find it contains the "Cookie La Moo" Hostess ad -- the original art for which I picked up at a MidOhioCon many years ago!

Neal Adams, incidentally, was kind of the "midwife" to the birth of the "Byrne robot". My designs were inspired by his Mandroids, from this classic issue:

That blew my mind, when I read it!

Steranko did great work. My first comic con, the Atlanta Fantasy Fair, had a design by Steranko. I was destined to love his work. =)

I don't have the issue anymore, but I so remember one of the X-MENs on Dave Cockrum 2nd run had a sequence where a de-powered Carol Danvers was in a sparring session against the Star Jammers...

On the last panel of the sequence, C'hod's little pet / buddy says  "Hiya toots!" to Carol in alien script.

One of my own forays into "alien" text was in NEXT MEN, where I modified the font I was using to create a Cyrillic alphabet, and then typed the dialog in English, with a paraphrasing beneath in a conventional typeface.

Got several letters from Russian speaking readers who got the joke -- and one who accused me of being "lazy".

Jim Sherman is the credited penciler and Jack Abel the inker; I'd assume Sherman was the one giving thanks?
