I love the paper even if the cover isn't glossy. I hope it continues. The pace is very fast and like any good issue gives me more questions than answers. The Bah, Hembeck is great at the end. I just need to hunt down the alt cover now. I asked two shops why they didn't get the alternate and of course they didn't order very many. I asked them if the hundreds of unsold "new 52" issues had anything to do with that decision with my tongue firmly in cheek. I don't think he got it.
JB, out of curiosity: - What was the decision for making Rock's texture a colored effect instead of an inked effect? - What was the decision for making the setting a unspecified, somewhat futuristic city? - How many issues ahead are you currently? =)

Loved it! Reading issue 1 felt like reading the comics of my youth - fast paced action, explosions, drama, hi-tech gadgets, sound effects (!), captions, a great cliffhanger, and, most importantly, no pages full of talking heads. Nautilus has a great-looking design and his creature is pure menace.
My favorite part was the dolphins and whales on page 10. They looked great! I desperately wanted to show them to somebody but there was nobody around to do so.

Bought it, read it, really like it.
Now some comments. The art was great (as usual). I like the characters so far and am looking forward to learning more about them and their world. Great issue overall.
Something curious about this paper stock. I much prefer it for a couple of different reasons. Somehow it makes the issue seem heavier and more physically substantial. It seems like its going to last a long time. It also has the effect of making it seem like an older comic...makes me reminisce.
Loved the whole thing JB. Thank you.

Thoroughly enjoyed this issue -- I hadn't realized how much I missed a solid, accessible, all-audiences superhero yarn. It'll be fun to see where it goes from here!
I particularly admire the art for the undersea life (both real and imagined). Great-looking work!

I enjoyed it. My only complaint is a bit of a backhanded compliment -- it felt too short. Just as I was really getting into the story, it 'ended'.
If comic books were like this as the norm, rather than the exception, I would probably be spending $100 plus a month on them, instead of $0.

Just finished reading this and my only complaint is that it leaves me wanting more!
And how about a good LCS story? I forgot to ask for this to be added to my pull list but when I got to my LCS found out that there was a copy waiting for me. Guy at shop had noted on my account that I like all things Byrne and automatically pulled one for me. But the greatness doesn't end there, he asked if I was interested in the variant cover. Could my day get an better! Lets just say my respect for this shop jumped up tenfold.

Got it loved it. I am so glad that JB has returned to his roots. It was worth the wait. This is another great addition to the Byrneverse. As for the team, a lot has been mentioned about them being in the mold of the FF but I did not get that feel at all. Obviously you are going to have comparisons of Reed and Ben to Paper and Rock but for Scissors, I am getting an Iron Fist/Karnak vibe. I loved Nautilus and his air of superiority. You made reading superheroes fun again. Thank you JB.

My hardcopy is on order via mail order service, but that wont be for another 3 weeks. Decided to get the digital copy for my iPad as well. With the digi copy you get all the variants. The pencil version was nice to have as well. Cool.
JB, what technique did you use for the whale/dolphin page? It looked great!

I have both cover issues in my LCS box, since I have to wait three weeks before my usual end-of-month clean-out. However, I did get a look at Issue #1, and my first impression upon seeing it on the rack in a sea of glossies was... "Hey, that one looks like a real comic book!" Just skimmed through it, but it looked like loads of fun! Poor Widget... Congrats JB!
