Milgrom is one of those classic "hated him when I was younger, appreciate him more now" guys.  He still isn't one of my favorites, but I can appreciate his talents more.  As others have mentioned, he was the Don Heck of the 80's... a guy who did very fast work to save deadlines, and as a result didn't always get to do his best work and had his reputation suffer as a consequence.

One area in which he excelled was cover layouts.  He did some fine covers.  It's not well-known, but a significant amount of the covers Kirby did at 70's Marvel were based on cover sketches by Milgrom.  If there was a Kirby cover on a book Kirby wasn't writing/drawing, then the cover was likely designed by someone else, and most often the someone else was Milgrom.

I've always and still have a lot of respect for Al's work. As a teen, I knew whatever title he was working on, I can definitely look forward to the next issue being on time.

He did David Letterman in the Avengers back in 84.  I have a special fondness for him just for that.

Milgrom was one of Those Guys who kept comics covers interesting, but unsung since I didn't recognize who he was when I was a kid. I really vilified him post-Byrne on the Hulk run, but I was just severely disappointed that JB was gone.

Milgrom is one of comics' all-time inkers. He gets my vote for his work on Stern and Rude's INCREDIBLE HULK VS SUPERMAN alone (and sure, who knows how much Milgrom had to work on here, but everyone should own a copy of this thing:)

I'm curious about how many of Al Milgrom's most classic, iconic covers were designed by Ed Hannigan.  The covers posted on this page definitely have a Hannigan feel to them.
