I'm not a fan. As a kid, I couldn't get away from him as he was the regular penciler on the awesome Roger Stern written Avengers. I was so relieved when the great John Buscema eventually took over.
I avoided West Coast Avengers because of Milgrom. His art was just very hard my eyes. Looking at the cool pages posted above, makes me wonder if it was more the Milgrom/Sinnott combo that didn't do it for me.

Looking back I can remember not being a fan of Milgrom's art but at the
same time finding him to be a quite competent storyteller. I don't know if
that really makes sense, but the pictures he put on the page didn't do
much for me, but the stories he told drew me in and kept me quite
entertained.

Enjoyed his 70s work. Captain Marvel, Guardians Of the Galawy, etc..Strongly disliked his mid80s work like Avengers West Coast (or was it WCA?). Excepted for the first few issue. But after that Wonderman in his green costume with his bottle reactors was an abomination, and maybe it influenced my dislike of the art on this book as a whole. i 'm not sure. Strongly disliked his art on Secret Wars II.
I read only on trade a few years ago Kitty Pride & Wolverine. I loved Al Milgrom's art on this book.
As an inker, Al Milgrom, i think, is always good, i almost said wonderful. I preffer Terry Austin, Bob Layton, and probably Joe Rubinstein, but close behind Rubinstein is Milgrom.

To me Al Milgrom is sort of like Ron Wilson; they have always has been there but does not get the recognition and/or credit that they deserve.

I enjoyed his work on Firestorm and Captain Marvel.
I find his inking overpowering for my taste.
(BTW - I didn't even know he was one of the creators of Firestorm until now.)

I loved the book he did as an editor : Marvel Fanfare I never really cared about him as a penciler And he is, in my book, one of the best, and unsung, inkers in the biz. He always did a wonderful work, on every possible penciler, and he never claimed the work as his own has an inker : Be it Jae Lee, JB, JRjr, Quesada, ans so many more, he always did his best to make the penciler shine. No way one can (easily) find him as the inker: a great pro

I was an Al Milgrom fan, but not a BIG fan. I wouldn't seek him out, but was happy to see him on books I read. Great storyteller. And great cover artist! In my opinion, he was always paired with inkers that "smoothed" his art out too much. Sinnott on Avengers and was it Mooney on Spectactular Spider-Man? Took a lot of power out of his art. I noticed he tended to ink himself on his covers and I thought the scratchiness and roughness of his inks brought out the power and dynamism of his pencils...seeing him ink himself, I saw an Al Milgrom I would have been a BIG fan of. Here are some examples (I wish THIS was the Milgrom art we would have gotten on the interiors of PPTSSM, WCA, Avengers, etc.!):

For those out there who aren't fans, I understand. Back in the 80's he
seemed like the bane of my comic collecting. Incredible Hulk,
Fantastic Four, Avengers, West Coast Avengers, Secret Wars II, he
was everywhere. You couldn't escape him. Since his name was
brought back up a few days ago, I went back and checked out his
work again, this time with an different perspective. Is his work a little
stiff? In some places. Does he have the illustrative quality of some like
JB, or Neal Adams? Nope. But, if you really examine the work, he's
better than we thought.

I must admit, his is not a name that left an impression on me; had someone referred to him out of context, I'm not even sure I would have placed him as a comic book artist. Looking at his body of work, I'm rather surprised at the large number of comic books I read that featured his artwork. He was one of those artists whose work didn't impress me enough to seek it out, nor did I find it bad enough to avoid.
I also find it interesting how variable his work was; unlike JB or Perez or other artists whose work I found recognizable, I doubt I ever realized all of those books were drawn by the same person.
