The Hulk artist thread got me wondering about his place in the
pantheon of comic artists. My personal thoughts are that he's a solid
inker, a fair penciler, but one of the journeymen that could be counted
on to deliver in a crunch for a fill in or a short run. Sort of the George
Tuska of the 80's. How about your's?

I have good memories of Al's work on the West Coast Avengers regular series. The WCA was one of the first books I remeber reading when I first became a collector, and was a favorite book for a long time. I pored over that first issue many, many times. He and Joe Sinnott were a great team.

As an inker I like his work, but I did not care for his inks over JB on Lost Generation or Spider-Man Chapter One. Just my personal preference, but JB is JB's best inker.

I first became aware of Al Milgrom's art when he was the artist for Captain Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy (in Marvel Presents) back in the '70s.

I'm not a fan of his pencils (even the Milgrom/Sinnott team on West Coast Avengers didn't work for me), but I like his inks, especially over his pal Jim Starlin.

My favorite inker for Milgrom was Klaus Janson -

Didn't like him as penciler.

Don't have an opinion about him as an inker. I guess he was okay...

He helped to bring out Firestrom, one of my favorites. So he's good to go in my book! I've always enjoyed his art.

Don't like his pencils. Way too stiff. I sorta have a fondness for his AVENGERS/WCA with Sinnott, but it's more for the stories than the art.

As far as inking, don't like it.

Except for:

I recall Milgrom working on Ed Hannigan's pencils in Spectacular Spider-Man during the mid-1980s before Sal Buscema's classic stint, and his artwork on Secret Wars II.  As I see it, he was a competent artist in his own right, but quite rough on his inks.  I had seen worse since then to know that he at least had the basics down for his job.

If there was any groan-inducing scenes that he ever drew, it was during that climax issue of SW2 in which the Beyonder rips a strip of Earth's crust away like someone was peeling an apple.  It was more the writing of that scene (Holy Silver Age, Batman!) than anything in how Milgrom drew it.

Better inker than penciler.  I always thought that as a penciler his characters looked stiff, as if they were posing for the shot rather than natural movement.

I do own a Al Bigley/Al Milgrom Batman 11 x 17 drawing.

Al Milgrom's name pops up in the credits of a whole bunch of comics that I've enjoyed over the years.  He's alright in my book!!!!!

Not really a fan of his work, usually, whether it be inking or pencilling, but I really liked his work on INCREDIBLE HULK VS SUPERMAN. There was also an image in the ROM thread that I like.

Milgrom gets a "thumbs up" from for Firestorm alone. I also find him to
be a solid penciller and inker and a strong storyteller.
