..why exactly did Sal Buscema leave ROM? Bill Mantlo stayed until the end, and we know Sal would have had the stamina to keep going (his unprecedented run on SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN being a testament to his skills and staying power).Did he just up-and-leave on his own accord? Or was he forced out to make way for Steve Ditko? As much as I truly enjoy the Ditko issues, it seems a shame that Sal couldn't make it all the way to the last issue and help close out the series he helped create. +++++++++++++++++++++ Bill & Sal had a falling-out during this time (confirmed by Sal himself in his TwoMorrow's bio-book, which is awesome!), and that's what led to Sal leaving the Hulk. But when looking at the cover dates of each book, the timeline doesn't mesh, so I'm guessing he just decided to leave on his own accord. Sal also had a serious dislike for the inking team of Ian Aiken & Brian Garvey during his Rom run, so I wonder if that had an influence.

I will say that if there is one thing Dave Aikins knows it is ROM!
If there is anything else I haven't noticed yet. :)

Actually, Jason... my memory of Rom is pretty bad these days. I'm lucky if I remember pants.
I do have all the issues in a 3 volume bound set. It's the only series I have bound. I bought a set of issues to get them sent off to binding, but then found an ebay auction for a set already bound. I now have 3 copies of the series...
which is scary.

That is impressive! I do tease but I have a full run of ROM as well. It was fantastic and a fave growing up. Heck, I even had some doubles that helped Joe Hollon fill in his run. Spread the ROM love is what I say.

Depends what "ruining" means to you. Binding takes the issues, removes the staples, trims the pages.... and you get it all put together in a nice hardcover. So, there's no going back after getting them bound.Bad news: if you put in too many issues, you start losing some art in the gutter (middle) of the book. Much like some of the DC & marvel collections, they get a bit hard to read.
Many collectors are big on the whole binding thing. Rom is the only series I have in the custom binding format.

Yep, and thanks again for that Jason! I still haven't read the whole series. Only about the first 25 issues but I really like it!

Neil- I totally agree. It's rarer that you see people binding books that are found in existing trades & hardcovers.
However, the world of binding offers many many many super cool bells & whistles these days- leather, gold stamping, etc. Those collectors with deep pockets have a lot of fun.
