Steve, it's not a matter of Marvel caring.
From way back on page 1:
Here's an interview with Rom toy creator, Lawrence McCoy:
HS: Has anyone approached you about any re-issuing of ROM either in toy or comic? Is the toy itself completely out of your hands? Do you have any connection to the toy-line/license/property or is it entirely Parker Brothers and Marvel?
LBM: I am in the process of re-acquiring the rights. Parker Brothers signed an agreement with Paramount not to use the name anymore, because Paramount threatened to sue claiming infringement on Star Trek's Romulan. I am getting that contract nulled by Paramount. Once that is done I can move forward.
So... if this is true, neither Marvel nor Hasbro can do anything with Rom until Paramount says it's okay.
Star Trek killed Rom.

But, since I work for Nick (which is owned by Viacom which owns Paramount)... maybe I can see about having ROM in an episode of SpongeBob.
Yeah... I can make this happen. I have that kind of connections...
sigh.
Stupid Romulans. Always messing up everything.

You know, earlier posts have suddenly left me wondering... ...why exactly did Sal Buscema leave ROM? Bill Mantlo stayed until the end, and we know Sal would have had the stamina to keep going (his unprecedented run on SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN being a testament to his skills and staying power). Did he just up-and-leave on his own accord? Or was he forced out to make way for Steve Ditko? As much as I truly enjoy the Ditko issues, it seems a shame that Sal couldn't make it all the way to the last issue and help close out the series he helped create.

aw man, this thread is already repeating answers to questions already asked.....
Shaun, here's the complete quote from Jim Shooter:
When Steve Ditko came around looking for work, I made it a priority to find him something—after all, he was a founding father, and though I couldn’t set right all the injustices of the past, I could make sure he had work if he wanted it. ROM seemed like a natural. Sal had plenty to do, so no worries there. The reason ROM was right for Steve is that Steve refused to work on “flawed” heroes! No feet of clay permitted. His philosophy was (and probably still is) that heroes should be noble. Period. I asked him about Spider-Man, some of whose flaws were Steve’s ideas. He explained that when he drew Spider-Man, Spider-Man was still a kid, still learning, and therefore, allowed some foibles. Fine, then. ROM, the noble Knight it was. Steve did some good work on ROM.

(Ha, sorry Dave! Hadn't bothered with the Shooter link. But thanks for posting the quote!)

It's nice that they found Steve work, but I think it's a shame that we ended up with a series that had 58 issues by one artist and 16 by another. It's almost like calling in a pitcher instead of letting him pitch a no-hiiter. Rom could've been ALL SAL, ALL THE TIME, BABY!!!!
I guess they didn't know the book had only a year or so left. Rom could've continued for years if sales somehow allowed.

That was indeed a great cover. Those Dire Wraiths were some good evil doers.

Can someone please explain to me how Rom is a infringement on Romulans? It isn't like Crew of the Enterprise or fans went around abbreviating it to Rom? And it isn't even like Romulans wasn't based on the word "Roman", which also has Rom in it. And nowadays, how would still be valid since Rom is going to make people think about part of the computer (ROM/RAM) before they think Romulans?
