I feel Ditko's decision to play the eyes as two dots was a bad one. The glow brings extra life to the character... look here how the lack of eye glow hurts profile shots:

Here's a kiss where the profile is avoided (and glowing eyes are included)... this feels better to me.

Ditko feels like he was "drawing a toy".

Me: Would you mind reminding me what the ROM sketch (on page 5 of this thread) was all about? What was it drawn for?

••

JB: If memory serves, Marvel was thinking about redesigning ROM's armor.

Thanks for the answer, sir.

I didn't know Walt did the Starshine redesign...

Like a lot of others I loved ROM as a kid. The Hybrid issues with the X-Men were some of the scariest things I'd ever read (as a ten year old). Loved Sal's art so much. I have the whole run now and wish it could one day be collected.

I was thinking a Sal ROM & Hulk vs. Dire Wraiths would be cool. Lots of zapping and smashing. Fun stuff.

You might want to order this one someday, Brad, with interior art by Sal and Gerry Talaoc (although I can't recall for sure if the Dire Wraiths make an appearance or not):

Incredible Hulk #296

Typically nifty Bill Sienkiewicz cover!

Great Hulk issue/guesting by ROM. Mantlo was smack in the middle of his final arc before the "Savage" Hulk appeared, and the Hulk with Banner's brain is starting to leak savagery. Gerry Talaoc's inks are fantastic on Sal, top five inker on him.

For the record, Sal's best inkers are Sinnott, Chan, Sal himself, Talaoc and Jansen, imo.

I mentioned this storyline up thread, and I agree with you, it scared me too.  I reread it a couple years ago and thought it stood up very well.  I couldn't help but wonder if Mantlo got inspiration from THE EXORCIST; the floating above the bed, physical change etc.  Honestly I was quite surprised at how good it was on the second reading.  As a kid, I was irritated that the sound effect when Wolverine popped his claws was SNIK instead of SNIKT.  It's weird how silly things like that stand out when you are that age.

Loved ROM as a child, but because of the awful distribution system in the UK at that time I never saw many issues past the X-Men one.

I was lucky enough to snap up the complete run on eBay only a few weeks ago though, so am very much looking forward to 'catching up'!!
