Such a shame that the Fantastic Four films made such  a mess or portraying Doom.

Agreed. The movies' Doom was abysmal.

Isn't Dr. Doom wearing white these days, with a restored face, all while trying to wed the Scarlet Witch?

Any one of the above three is more than off character.  All three together?  Wow.

As horrible as the movie version of Doom was, it was still waaay better than that garbage.

I'm actually embarrassed for Bendis for writing dialogue like that.

I know how to fix all this...

Since JB left the book, every appearance of Doom is a robot!

Wow.  Bendis writes that type of dialogue... yet John Byrne gets the reputation for "hating women???"

Edit to add:  "...a fat piece of furniture..."  What the hell does that even mean?

Makes me glad that I never even got to read a Bendis-scripted book.  I think Chris Claremont's "wordiness" is far better in comparison.

The panels that Peter posted has shown up in past threads and in one of them JB wrote how he would have scripted it. I wish I could find it, it was perfect!

IIFC it was posted on a commission of Dr. Doom that JB had done for Jim W.

I enjoy Bendis' creator-owned stuff too, but that Doom dialog is unbelievably bad.  I'm surprised that I can still be surprised by the depths to which Marvel and DC find themselves sinking to.

On the thought that if this kind of stuff was what was being published in the 70's and 80's what kind of impact would it have had: I was reading a recent Spider-Man issue (I know, glutton for punishment...) and my 2 1/2 year-old son came up to me and sat on my lap and started reading with me.  (It was a "safe" scene for reading thank goodness).

As my wife took pictures of me and my son as it was a happy day for me- I started reading Spider-Man at the same age and thrilled for him to pick it up.

At the same time I'm sad because the current stuff is almost wholly inappropriate for kids AND horribly written.

Time to break out the Masterworks set!

••

Say one thing about that small clutch of panels -- it's not often we can find so many of a writer's affectations collected into such a convenient reference source! Even managed to slip in a "The hell...", one of Bendis' ticks that reads to me, whenever I see it, like there is a glitch in the soundtrack.

What's happening there, of course, is a clear example of what has gone wrong with comics, as they have turned more and more into expensive fanzines. This is not a writer looking to find Doctor Doom's "voice" as portrayed in countless previous appearances, but simply saying "This is how / write this character!"
