I like that analogy, too.
And I agree with the main points. I can't help but think that that "Superman talking to a priest" plot would, in the old days, have been a few panels or mentioned off-screen. Nowadays, it made up an entire issue!

Nowadays, it made up an entire issue!•• And scripts like that are exactly what Wally Wood was talking about, with his "22 Panels that Always Work". There are few things in this business worse than a writer who turns in what is essentially a prose story, which gets handed to some poor schmuck artist to be illustrated!

I think Trio is spot on, no fake nostalgia, no pretence of any kind, just comics as they were at their best. The most important thing for me though is that no matter how crazy it gets we never get a wink to us the audience.

I need more issues of Trio to really say I like it or don't like it -- right now all I can say is "I don't hate it". I could go into my reasons, as a reader, why this is -- but I don't want to come across as being disrespectful to JB at his own forum. I think I need some more issues to make my mind up for sure.

I'll admit to agreeing with you. I was going to grab the series, but I kind of held off when I found out it ended on a cliffhanger. So I'm kind of waiting for its return before I dive in. I do want to like it and am looking forward to trying it i just need to be picky with how I spend my money.

I think that, at some point, it was TRANSGRESSIVE to have Superman sitting on a cloud or standing in mid-air instead of flying and doing dynamic stuff.
Also, I blame this trend in some degree on the Manga influence...both the decompression of stories and the "standing still looking cool" covers were commonplace in Japan before infecting American comics.

Yes, the trade does include the alternate covers, which was a big selling point for me as I had no luck finding those in the shops.
The trade looks really good - whike it has a glossy cover, the paper is matte so it feels like the comic book, which felt like an old school comic book!
This is worth tracking down the trade - its a blast of comic book fun with some killer art from JB.

I like cliffhanger endings when there is a resolution in sight. For me, the wait can steal from the reward . Since I am on a budget, I will likely wait until the next TRIO series is coming out.
