I also think JB's dispassion for those characters actually worked in their favor. Since none of them (perhaps except Heather) were particularly beloved, he could put them through the wringer. --- That could be... though JB really cares for Jazz and Tony, and they both endured more than their fair share of suffering.

…you had a little person hero who kicked butt, a disabled hero, an important hero dying very unexpectedly… •• All three of which were almost immediately undone the moment I left the book. Mantlo's run on the book was curious, to say the least. As I recall he was guilty of two of the above (Puck and Bochs) and, to make matters worse, created an autistic character (Goblyn/Laura?) who he he then duly "cured". Conversely, making Heather wear the suit was a mistake. It killed the book for me, particularly after JB had already said in the letters page, I think, that the costume would not work on a woman. Heather and her relative normality was the heart of the series.

JB - It must have at least been a bit liberating that there wasn't much of a chance of editorial interference, no? I'm pretty sure they would not have let you blow up the Earth...but they might have actually let you blow up Canada if you wanted to!•• They well might have -- tho I am sure had I done so, I would have received a torrent of mail from north of the 49th Parallel, informing me that I was an ignorant Yank, and Canada would NOT blow up like THAT!!

Here's a question that has long confused me... this image appears in JB's Modern Masters book...
...but the lettering is missing! My question is: Why was the lettering removed? What was the letter-less piece used for? Besides the Modern Masters book, I have never seen the above image without the lettering.

What do you mean? I can't recall seeing lettering on this Commission when it was posted to the board a few years back.

I'm wondering if Nathan thought that was the image of the Guardian "pinup" that was published in AF...as opposed to the commission recreation.

Isn't that the original? The commission didn't have a background. Nathan would know, he owns the original.

OK, then I'm off there (sorry Nathan!) That's definitely NOT that commission. The Guardians in each look different. (And I guess the sig line on the image Nathan posted is also dated...oops). Carry on...
