Interesting to contrast Flash Thompson in the panels Nathan posted, as vs the Romita spread on the previous page of this thread. As he became more of a "good guy", flash became more conventionally good looking. Ditko's Flash would have ended up looking more like this. . .

Ditko for me.
I think they're both fantastic artists, but I enjoyed Ditko's quirkiness.

While I'm at it... here's a great example of Ron Frenz doing his "Ditko Spider-Man" (this bad boy is currently hanging on a wall in my office!)

Joel, I was just thinking about this cover a couple of hours ago. I'm very jealous. How long have you had it?

A few years. It was one of my all time favorite covers. Full disclosure - it's a commissioned recreation from Mr. Frenz. Not the actual original. Also, this picture doesn't do it justice (crappy iPhone 3 camera!)

I would have assumed that it was the original, but the logo, etc. was done on overlay (since it is missing). Regardless, it is awesome!

I disagree about Frenz' Spider-Man. I admire Frenz and his Thor run is on my list of things I expect to love. But his Spider-Man was exactly what I mean about aping Ditko. He took on many of Ditko's quirks without making them really work (to my eyes). Ditko's random webbing, for example, was compensated for by his seemingly endless number of new poses he came up with for Spidey. But just doing sloppy webbing on standard Spider-Man poses doesn't "evoke" the special part of Ditko's art-- it just apes his quirks.
I will say that it seemed to me that McFarland and Larsen and a bunch of others took Frenz' "Ditko" webbing to heart when they took over -- but that was a trend I really didn't like.
When artists follow Romita's example, as Ross Andru, Sal Buscema, Gil Kane, and so many others did, they were able to contribute classic Spider-Man material while working in their own styles.

However, I feel those 38 issues and two annuals by Ditko and Stan are comic book perfection. **** Paul, I think everyone who wrote their choice believes the same thing you do, but looking at the artwork and the words printed it seems there was a contradiction. Stan Lee is the creator of Spider-Man and I think he knew where his creation needed to go and with Romita the books flowed a lot better.

Not sure what you're seeing, but I personally see a lot of "flow" in those first 38 issues. Feels to me like you're letting what you know about their collaboration behind the scenes affect what you're reading. I know about it and I don't see what you're talking about at all.
