I would go with Romita but Ditko's work has grown on me over the years. I never used to like his work or Kirby's for that matter, then sanity prevailed and I like their stuff alot now.

Oh, and just in case I wasn't clear... JOHN ROMITA, SR. is my pick.

This is a tough call, but I have to say Romita Sr. - the reprints in MARVEL TALES were part of my introduction to the character.
But Ditko was not far behind and is one of his fathers, so it feels weird saying Romita Sr.!

Ditko by a mile. He made a kid superhero creepy yet still someone you can root for. There's nothing else like it.

Ditko. Romita is a nearly flawless illustrator, but his urban environments (a core part of the appeal, to me) can't hold a candle to Ditko.

Ditko for Spider-Man (as well as Doctor Strange). Romita is awesome, but there is something about early Ditko art.

I think I'd go with Romita Jr. over both. His style is kinda, sorta, in a very rough way, an amalgam of the two. He's also come up with the most innovative poses for Spider-Man (imo).

I think my first exposure to Spider-man came through Hanna- Barbara's Spider-man show. Would you say that's more Romita than Ditko?

I think I'd go with Romita Jr. over both. --- I missed the name John Romita, Jr. as a third choice in Ben's initial post. I'd still go with Sr. though.

You didn't miss anything, Wallace. :) And, come to think of it, I'd love to see Sr. inking Jr. on a regular basis.

Tough choice. My first exposure to Spider-man was Romita's work. I do like Ditko's work on the character too, and he is the creator of Spider-man's body language. Many of those poses of Spider-man are still used to this day by artist. My first exposure to Ditko's work was on the Creeper.

No question: Ditko.
Great layouts, superb character designs, and a visual style which others have pointed out completely captures the awkward and sometimes dark themes of the stories.
Romita's art is very clean, but this almost works against him, in my opinion. He made the characters, particularly Peter Parker, too handsome.
