Layton is one of the go-to inkers when you want an exact recreation of something by an artist who wasn't involved at all in the original piece. I don't get it.

I wonder if Layton thought JB screwed up the perspective (which JB didn't do), or if Layton simply goofed?

At least he credited JB as the original artist, which too many seem to "forget."

Maybe he is one of the few professionals that will do such a thing? It is strange to me to have an artist unconnected to the original work do a recreation.

I have less of a problem with this Phoenix piece than a lot of others I've seen. At least this was just a sketch the commissioner had Layton flesh out, add backgrounds, etc. It's a different piece of art than what JB created (whether it's an improvement is debatable, but I digress...). It's not much different than having a pencil piece inked by a different artist.

It seems funny to me that a tracing of another's work would get the attribution of "after so-and-so". Doing your own version of another's piece would be "after..." but tracing it actually uses the work of the original artist-- it's not "after..." it's during!

It could also be a case of what would Bob's inks look like over that JB piece.

I guess I would buy that idea if Terry Austin had been commissioned to do the piece.

I know this changes the subject a bit, but it brings it back to JB. I liked that JB basically "homaged" himself with these three covers:
Namor #1 Man of Steel TPB Avengers West Coast #50

On the second cover, Spider-Man looks like he's running away from a guy who slipped after stepping in some goo.

I agree. Not my favorite Zeck cover.
