One day, back in Art College, I started doodling Roman numerals on a page in one of my sketchbooks. This was around 1972, but I was already thinking ahead, and planning to start dating my work with Roman numerals once the century changed. I didn't want to mess around with MCMLXXXVII and other such numerical jawbreakers, but once we hit 2000/MM, I figured I'd be ready to start.Which I did, on an issue of HIDDEN YEARS, a book I could not even have dreamed of ever being able to do back in 1972. Funny thing was, as I have mentioned before, a number of people wrote in to ask who the inker was, whose initials were MM. Thank you educational system! Well, in a very short time now, I will be starting on the first commission piece for 2012, and that will, of course, be dated MMXII -- so it's twelve years already since that first XHY cover! I wonder how high I'll get? Even as far back as 1972 -- MCMLXXII -- I had been giving serious consideration to making my planned and (hopefully) gracious exit when I was in my 66th year -- MMXV -- but I'm lately rather liking the "symmetry" of MMXX. Will I really jot that notation onto a commission piece some day? Or do the fates have other plans for me? JOHN BYRNE - MCML to ?

I hope you drop at your table right after you finished your last commission, still at the top of your game, going Kubert strong!

Just work happily and fruitfully long enough to eliminate the C!•• Reminds me of a "challenge" I once gave my father. Live to be 99, I told him, and you will have been born in 1920, and checked out in 2019. Only one chance in a century to do that! He didn't make it, but having passed 90, he certainly gave it the old college try!

My dad's aiming at the Century mark himself, so you're not the only one watching the years add up. Me, I'm happy with just past eighty-seven years, by which time I hope to still be able to take short walks in the park and see my great grandnephews and nieces every so often ("C'mhere kid! Pull my finger.")

MCMLXIV... Man, if I'd gotten my birth year as a Scrabble tray, I'd be screwed!

I always thought I would look forward to retiring, but as I get older I'm not so sure. I think it would be good to always be doing something, and as I get older I enjoy my work more and find it to be healthy and gratifying.
I'm probably just saying this because I'm on vacation for the holiday. I will change my tune next week when I go back to work and likely go back to devising my next Kramdenesque get-rich-quick scheme so I can stop working forever!

So, JB, when you say gracious exit you mean retiring completely from the craft?
