JB: "They wanted to 'modernize' my pencils. Which raises the eternal question, if you don't want what an artist does, why hire that artist?"
*****
That's the reason? "Modernize"??? Are they high? Have they seen the commissions that were happening and continue to happen on this forum? It just makes no sense to me.
The most infuriating aspect to JLA was how Ordway changed the facial expressions. JB is known for well done action scenes, but as I read the "Fantastic Four Omnibus", I am reminded that JB's ability to capture the subtlety of a character's facial expression was evident early on in his career. It means so much to the stories. As a kid reading FF, I thought it was the cool action and compelling sci-fi stories, but re-reading the FF Omnibus, I see that JB could capture these excellent human moments through the look of a character's eyes. Or how a character is on the verge of smiling or frowning, but not quite yet.
Ultimately, I think the "Tenth Circle" story was so strong that the issues hold up well and overcome the inking issues. I still think it's an excellent read.
Marvel just celebrated the 30th Anniversary of "X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga" with a hardcover collection of the Claremont/Byrne/Austin collaboration. That was the last time JB and Claremont collaborated until "The Tenth Circle". DC was beyond foolish to leave Austin out of this mix, but there is still time for them to correct this mistake. Copies of the pencils still exist - why not hand them over to Terry Austin and publish a trade on it? A "Tenth Circle Remix", if you will. To have Claremont and JB collaborate and leave Austin out was a mistake, but it's not too late to fix that mistake. And that also gives them a chance to fix that maddening coloring error!

I wish they would get Terry Austin to re-ink a "special edition" trade. I might buy the trade then. Sorry JB, but those inks bother me so much, I won't pay for the story again without some changes.

I like Janson's work, always have, and he is my favorite inker for JRJr., but I didn't think his work over JB's on Wolverine was as natural a combination. I think Tom Palmer would have been a better fit for that run ******************* See, I'm the exact opposite. I cannot stand Palmer's inks over JB, but love them over JRjr. I'm the one guy in the world that doesn't like Sinnott over JB, too. I dig Janson over both of them, tho.

Keep in mind, Klaus was working over loose breakdowns on WOLVERINE.

Having recently re-read those Wolverine issues I appreciate Janson's inks more than when I first read that arc many moons ago. I always prefer JB inks but it's always interesting as a fan to see how different inkers ADAPT JB's linework, for good or ill. (except for Nelson. :P )

BTW JB - after looking at the Atom page above, and Nathan's original art to the final NEXT MEN page, I just realized that your current inking line is beginning to look a lot like Trevor Scott's. Not sure if you'd see it that way, but I see a resemblance at least.

I was thinking the same thing about the resemblance, though I feel JB's line is a more "organic" version, which makes it more appealing to my taste!

Yeah, I can see that -- tho he leans a bit more toward Terry's "mechanical" line than I do.
