I do wonder about that. Nelson had posted on message boards at the time, acting as though the changes were his idea. That would line up with the fact that the other inkers on the ACTION run did not plunder JB's pencils in the same fashion.

Modernise your pencils? How depressing.

The thing is, Nelson's style is not "modern" and in no way "modernized" the pencils. I thought his inks harkened back, not forward.
I think an argument could be made that Trevor Scott's inks on the Atom came closer to "modernizing". In the sense that his work is more indicative of styles that appeared in the 90s, after JB was established. I thought it was a nice pairing, too.

Yes, I quite liked the inks on THE ATOM.

I've often said that while Image may have given us terrible pencillers and writers, their inkers from that era were quite good, and Trevor Scott was one of them.
And put me down for liking the brief ATOM collaboration as well.

Me too! It still felt like your work, JB... and yet the inks brought something uniquely different to the page. It was a nice combo.

Yeah! The Atom was a very energetic combination.

Unfortunately, the colorist apparently thought all the people were wearing clothes made from plastic bags!

I was okay with Klaus Janson's inks over JB's pencils in WOLVERINE because I felt they suited the title.
I remember not caring for the ATOM inks at the time because they seemed "scratchy" to me. The posted example looks better than I recall though.

I like Janson's work, always have, and he is my favorite inker for JRJr., but I didn't think his work over JB's on Wolverine was as natural a combination. I think Tom Palmer would have been a better fit for that run, aside from JB himself, if they were going for something akin to what we saw in Hidden Years, where the Byrne & Palmer combination seemed perfect, even better than a possible Byrne & Austin reunion. The final product was further enhanced, though, by Joe Sinnott inking the FF panels :-)
Hidden Years was great!

I also recall looking forward to the Atom pairing, wondering if it WOULD appear more contemporary, so to speak, but as usual, I was left wishing Byrne had inked it himself.
I will even admit to wondering what a John Byrne/Scott Williams pairing would look like, but again, Byrne on Byrne is simply too awesome to avoid.
Furthermore, given JB's fantastic skill set, I often wonder why anybody, any editor, would consider anything else but giving John his own book to write, pencil, ink, letter, and leave alone (no crossovers).

As close as I came to committing to that book, I was stopped when I realized I simply could not trust editorial, up at Marvel. If there was more than one X-MEN FOREVER style book, it would not be long before someone said "Crossover!"
