I would have no problem identifying that as Wolverine. Another thing to
think about regarding Wolverine is that even without the mask the
shape of his hair makes his head still resemble the mask. So I think
that's why he may look the most different with this uniform.

I like Wolverine with the distinctive mask, but, as Tim said, it may be
because it's what I'm used to. As I looked at the altered pic, I wondered
what Colossus would look like with the pointed shoulders of his traditional
costume.

He has a distinctive posture that screams "Logan!".

I would agree about Peter's shoulders. Maybe at least take the fabric out and over like the others outfits.

The "uniform mask" version of Wolverine is easy to pinpoint in that secluded
figure illustration. The pose is all-Wolverine.

On the matter of Colossus' shoulders -- as I was considering the "looks" for each character, I kept in mind that the original school uniforms, as previously noted, were modified from the basic design only where such modification was dictated by their powers. Peter's flared shoulders, on his traditional costume, did not spring from this. They were purely a design element.

Now, technically, this could also be said of Storm's and Banshee's "wings", since both had been seen to fly without them. So, for Peter, that brings up another element -- what does the uniform look like when he's not using his power? I'm guessing the black cloth returns, like his blue leggings, and if that's the case, the flared shoulders would be something of a radical departure from the others. And it's important to remember that these were supposed to be UNIFORMS, in the full sense of that word.

I like the Wolverine without the famous mask.  The whole school uniform thing was a big draw for me.  They felt like outcasts that had a place to belong?  Something like that.

I think Wolverine's ferral stance and grin still stil gives him away even without the distinctive mask and claws. But if he were calmer then I think I might have more trouble recognizing him.

Coming back to the original question of names alone: I don't know if I would have recognized Wolverine from his blue and yellow costume when introduced. The "sharp" points in his mask and the blue tiger stripes might be an indicator of something ferral. But I could see me also mistaking Nightcrawler for Wolverine based on Kurt's beastly appearance.

Even though the X-Men weren't in the school uniforms when Hidden Years
took place, seeing this "Just imagine..." image makes me wish Hidden Years
had been allowed to continue. Sighhhhh...

I am with you, Thomas. I have most of the original issues and the hidden years were the stories that could have taken place if they didn't go into reprints until issue 94 :)

From original;

Like Wolverine or Nightcrawler best. Nightcrawler really fits.

Storm I like, but the mask makes me think she'd be called something
like Butterfly for some reason.

Colossus's mask doesn't work for me; and I think it's because of the
black. All other major dark parts of the costume (arms and legs)
vanish when he become metal, leaving the mask to stick out.

(Hmmm, when Jim Lee put them in a variation of this uniform, he
dropped all the masks, didn't he. I wonder why.)

Now I could be curious to see the rest of the all-new X-men;
Thunderbird and Sunfire, and even Havok and Polaris since they never
wore the original uniforms. :)

I think removing the yellow stripe in Wolverine's 'famous' mask would help balance the overall levels of light and dark in the costume and make it blend with the other uniforms a little better.  It would basically be the school cowl with the distinctive ears, all dark.

I can definitely appreciate how difficult it is to get this balance right -- if the relative levels of light and dark for any one of them is off by a little bit it draws attention to the individual and makes them look like less of a team.  Unless of course that's the intention of the artist!

I also find it amazing how something as subtle as a thinner outline on the buckle and the buckle emblem not extending to the edge changes the mood of the piece.  Sure, Cyclops' grin sets the overall tone of the picture but the less somber mood of the whole piece is reinforced by these subtle cues.

…a thinner outline on the buckle and the buckle emblem not extending to the edge…

••

That's how Kirby drew the "buckle" in the earliest issues.

Note, especially, the corner symbol.

The X extending to the edge of the buckle shows up for the first time (at least deliberately!) in issue 26 -- about halfway thru, and with no internal reason or explanation. It stays that way in the next issue when the buckle and belt turn red for the first time.
