This character and Zatanna were both "gutted" by being "improved" by later "designers" who took away the fishnets and turned them into interchangeable, forgetable, "generic" characters.
--------------------------------------------------
I believe that Zatanna's second costume was designed by George Perez. If folks are really into the fishnets and top hat look, I can understand their being upset with the change, but as for me, I like the Perez one. The first time I ever saw the character, she was in the Perez costume, and drawn by the Great George his own self! Plus, did you see the way Alan Davis drew her in "Another Nail"? Spectacular! The blue and white one really does work, if you give it a chance. As for the Black Canary one with all the white on it, I'm "meh" about it. It'd probably be fine for another heroine, but not for the Canary.

Um, I like fishnets, but only on girls. Just clarifying. •• THAT'S what was missing from the bare-shouldered Cosmic Boy outfit!

*** I didn't think that the idea that outfit could get worse, but JB proved it wrong.

Zatanna had a second costume before George Perez's design, which was meant to correct the travesty the was said second costume:

Indeed, he did, Matt. I especially loved Ross Andru inked by Dick Giordano on a lot of covers--particularly Superman-related covers--of that late-'70s vintage.

There is an old saying, which touches on a very serious subject: "When you take away the customs, culture and religion of a people, we better replace it with something of value."I wish, on a more frivolous topic, some similar thought could be applied to changing a character's costume! (Mind you, I am sure whoever designed the poor replacements for various outfits over the years, including Black Canary's and Zatanna's, really DID think what they put there instead was "something of value".)

I've wondered if the Zatanna's costume change in JLA #161 reflected the desire to make her look "more like a super-hero" or some such nonsense since she was officially joining the World's Greatest Super-Heroes. No matter the reason, it was one ugly costume.
