Wow... I had not seen the costume for the new film in such detail before... That is truly appalling. As to what it's made of, I'm going to guess trash bags... Which make him look a bit Hefty... :-)

I do like the wonky Golden-Age design of the logo, but the material of which it is made looks like common industrial rubber, and the rest of the costume looks like an air mattress cut apart and reassembled with a hot glue gun.

That is genuinely unpleasant to look at.

I've seen shirtless photos of that new Superman actor and
he is pretty beefy, so I would guess that it's some kind of
cling wrap. I can't imagine how bad my love handles and I
would look in a shirt made of that stuff. Yeesh! :)

But you can see the design of that costume de-emphasizes the love handles.

May I call it what it is?  That design on the right is a "Groin Pointer" -- every line takes you there.

^ LOL! Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. That's why so
many middle-aged women went to see Thor---Hemsworth.

If trunks are such an issue and they're redesigning anyway, why not just give Superman red pants? Christ.

Red pants?  RED PANTS!?!?  Don't be ridiculous, red pants are totally unrealistic!  Where as Kryptonian battle armor with seams and lines is perfectly realistic.  ;-)

It's one thing to redesign a classic, but quite another when that new design is ugly and pointless.

The new design image Paulo linked to is a nice example: Superman still has trunks, they're just blue.

Trunk lines, perhaps, but that's a metallic suit. The trunk area is made of the same stuff as the rest of the suit.

Big metal nappy trunks (cf diaper, yes the Britishisms thread creeps in here), which are so much more realistic and kewl than cloth trunks.

There's been something nagging at me about the "battle armor" Superman wears now since it was first announced, and I think this thread has finally helped me nail down what that is...

Since when is Krypton a warrior civilization where the donning of ceremonial armor is somehow seen as a good thing? Has there ever been a warrior-themed Krypton before this? There have been tales told of Krypton's war-like past with giant mechs and Dwalu warriors and such, but the modern Krypton has, to date, always been portrayed as a civilization either at or well beyond its peak, living more or less in peace with itself and neighbors... I wonder if all that's going by the wayside with this new incarnation...

Is DC so pleased with its re-creation of the previously pacifistic Wonder Woman as Red Diana, She-Amazon with a Sword that Superman is now to hail from a rugged, Barsoomian he-planet where the men are men, the women are glad of it, and no man would think to shave his eyebrows, wear an evening gown, or reproduce through the mail?

Is this the dawning of Kull-El, the Barbarian?

And just like Tom mentioned about the movie abomination,
the belt tugs your eyes right to the super-package.
