I was just talking minutes ago with my UPS driver about the subject of trunks. He was talking about seeing a picture from the upcoming Superman movie and told me it doesn't look right. He thought it made Superman look more "naked."

Am I mistaken or did DC get rid of Superman's trunks in the comicbooks too? (The upcoming MOS movie, meanwhile, looks like something out of the SyFy channel)

You are not mistaken, Paulo. I mentioned that to my UPS driver and he thought it was silly to mess with something that everyone knows and has no problem with. For the record, he is not a comics fan, though he had read them in his youth, and he watches the movies.

I think superhero comics have finally nuked the fridge. Obviously, nothing is sacred anymore.

And another kick in the groin: Daken, Wolverine's son, is now wearing the brown and tan costume

Ugh!

Something that just occurred to me --- all these redesigns over at DC I think may represent the only time an entire line has been designed (or redesigned) by a single artist. Traditionally, superheroes have sprung from many different creative sources. Even early Marvel, which was accused by some of having Kirby as a "house style", in fact had a diverse range of artists working there. No one would ever mistake Steve Ditko for Jack Kirby, or Jack Kirby for Don Heck, or Don Heck for Wally Wood, etc, etc.

Jim Lee is a reasonably talented artist, but there is a cookie-cutter quality to his work. The same poses, the same lighting, and, indeed, the same costume elements, turn up again and again. Now, this is the official look of DC, a company which once set the standard for diversity in style, both artistically and in the costumes.

This is pretty much my only complaint about his work. Love the guy's stuff, but he needs some new ideas for costuming.

Matt, your UPS driver sounds like a sensible guy!

Superman is an icon of American culture.

One of the costumes below represents the icon. One blows chunks.

my biggest gripe with the Superman costume on the right is it's too dark.

A few other good ones I forgot
The criminal gladiator
taskmaster
hyperion
Mr. Element
Dr. Midnite

What is that nuSperman's costume made of?  That's like no material I've ever seen before.
