JB, Neal Adams, Garcia-Lopez, Aparo, and Colan, for me.  And just like JB, Perez and Alan Davis can do no wrong, in my eyes, so I'll have those two round out my Top Seven Batman Pencillers.

As far as defining the character for me:

Jim Aparo (BRAVE AND THE BOLD and his run on BATMAN when I started reading comics in the late '80s. My "Curt Swan" of Batman)

Dick Sprang (similar to Carl Barks, the classic stories from reprints that I loved as a kid were usually drawn by him)

Neal Adams (no explanation really needed -- the covers, the Ra's al Ghul and Joker stories, and so on)

Norm Breyfogle (DETECTIVE run in the late 80s/early 90s are among my favorites)

John Byrne (displaced Marshall Rogers for me once GENERATIONS came out)

I'm thrilled to share this piece from the BATMAN 3D (1990)
graphic novel which was created by the great John Byrne;

The piece is NOT a Byrne page, but one of the pinups from that book.

I call it "the last Aparo masterpiece":

BATMAN 3D - Batman vs Ra's Al Ghul pinup

I've been longing for an epic Aparo piece for years now.
My collection consisted of some fine Aparo pieces,
but none could truly compare with his earlier efforts which
made him the legend that he is.

Once I saw the published version of this piece, I knew this
was the one to have. Certainly not the last piece of his career,
but the last giant, monumental piece which could stand by his
very best works of the past.

I'm very honored to be the current holder of this beauty.
I truly apologize for the abysmal scan I'd posted. I don't have
a decent scanner so it'd take me some time to get a better scan.

In the meantime, bring you old 3D glasses and check out the
published 3D version !

Nice art there, by Mr. Aparo---thanks for the link!

BTW:  I wasn't a Batman reader during the "Bane broke his back" storyline.  Did Bruce and Oracle spend a lot of time commiserating about being wheelchair bound?  I remember reading about Bruce's broken back and thinking, "What's next--Tim breaks his back, then Dick breaks his back, then Alfred breaks his back.....?"  I was really worried that Bruce would come back with a cyborg spine or something....and considering the era this story happened in, the spine would have been visible through his skin...and his costume...and have spikes on it....

.....gods, I hate the '90's.........

Pet peeve alert! Someone can break their back without severing their spine. Breaking the back refers to the bones, which in turn can (but don't always) sever the spinal cord with the sharp edges of the broken bone fragments or cause impairment due to compression of the spine.

Barbara got shot through the spine. Her back didn't break - her spinal cord was severed by a bullet. Bruce had the bones in his back broken, but the spine wasn't severed - he just had to go through a lot of physiotherapy and training again after waiting for his back to heal so it wouldn't sever the spine or compress it.

Yeah, I know, Brad.  I used to speak very precisely about stuff like that, but I found that most people have no patience for it.  It's like correcting someone's grammar---they pretty much avoid speaking to you after that.  :)

Hi Tony,

Funny that you mention "Bruce and Oracle spend a lot of time commiserating about being wheelchair bound?" under my post...

If you take another look at my Aparo folder, you'd see the couple of pages which depict Babs and Bruce (only) chat during the KNIGHTFALL saga. Nice dialogue by Doug Moench there.

SER: Yet, it ultimately didn't matter, as Bruce was healed through magical means. This annoyed the hell of me for several reasons: O'Neil (the editor at the time) was very big on instilling realism in the Bat-books but then Batman's ailment is cured through magic. I consider that as much of a cheat as if Bane breaks Batman's back in the Nolan film and some random character heals him with magic powers.

I also thought it was a bit of a slap in the face to have Bruce Wayne confined to a wheelchair -- similar to Barbara Gordon -- and then have him healed magically and back to 100 percent while Barbara had to remain in a wheelchair.

However, just from the narrative angle, the use of Sondra Kinsolving as a "deus ex machina" was not satisfying. And it seemed unnecessary: Bane was taking over Gotham, so clearly Bruce would need an immediate replacement while he recovered from pretty serious injuries. A beaten and broken Bruce must then focus on physically and mentally recovering (keeping in mind that he was suffering from chronic fatigue prior to this, which was never mentioned after Bane broke his back). The same story without the "shock" of the broken back but I don't think the story would have suffered.

I mean, read BATMAN 497 -- even without Bane breaking his back -- there's no way Bruce is putting the cape on for quite a while.

Yes, this was the only Barbara Gordon appearance during this whole saga.
I was expecting more, but Babs as Oracle appearances were still much more scarce.
She made a more prominent appearance during ZERO HOUR and onwards.
I did enjoy this little chat (and honored to own the original art), as Babs actually shows
concern about Bruce trying to get healed via some sort of "magic trick" (AA Venom usage).

Anyhow, I owed you a much better image (of the BATMAN 3D pinup), so I've now uploaded
a decent photo which does a bit more justice to this magnificent piece:

This one is a snapshot, but it's much better than the photoshop stitched image I posted earlier.
I still hope to get by a decent scanner sometime and update my CAF with some better images.
