I was reading a Batman comic from the early 90s today (Detective 629) that Aparo drew and it dawned on me how long of a career he had. He has to be up there in the most issues of Batman drawn.

What I find amazing is that most of Aparo's work hasn't been reprinted up until now, and that just barely.
His work in the Brave & the Bold has just been reprinted as a part of the Showcase series, as was his opening work for Batman & the Outsiders. His Spectre work was put into a great collection a few years ago. And his later work on "A Death in the Family" has been reprinted a few times. But other than that, including the aforementioned "Batman: Murderer" series? Nothing.
Glad to see this collection giving him his due; hope it continues and includes his Batman work in titles other that B&B.

Yeah but when you think about it Andrew, DC has been pretty bad about reprinting pre-crisis comics in general until recently. Not counting the Showcases of course.

The Bat-Murderer Saga was reprinted as a digest-sized edition in Best of DC #9. Of course, it would benefit from a modern full-sized reprint...

Jim Aparo's Batman is one my of absolute favourites. I always thought it was a shame we didn't get to see late 70's-Early 80's Aparo inked by Dick Gordano. (That would have combined my favourite Batman penciler with my favourite Batman inker)

BATMAN 414 was my first exposure to Aparo. When I started buying comics regularly, he was essentially the main Bat artist. I loved his work on Ten Nights of the Beast and later Death in the Family. He even drew the climax of Knightfall.
I discovered his B&B in back issues and fell deeper in love with his work. I prefer when he inked himself and those issues were just so much fun.
I recommend the Showcase volumes of his B&B because his work looks so great in black and white.

Aparo rocks. I think I first became aware of him on Detective, and shortly thereafter on Batman & the Outsiders. He's got a kind of Kubert vibe that I like......kind of loose, but very crisp at the same time. Heckuva talent, that Mr. Aparo.

yeah, as I typed that thought I remembered DC doing a li'l digest reprint of Bat-Murderer back in the early 80s.
But still, Aparo deserves better than that.
Still waiting for TwoMorrows tribute to him, announced before his death and since...shelved?

Jim Aparo is to Batman like Ross Andru is to Spider-Man (for me). They are MY artists on said characters 'cuz thats when I started reading their books. Would have loved to seen Aparo's Spider-Man.

"announced before his death and since...shelved?" As I recall, there was some mention that the book had expanded in scope since it was announced. Though there is a timeliness issue with most of Twomorrows output. The "how-to-book" by Manley and Blevins has been delayed for years as well, in addition to the "once in a blue moon" schedule of "Draw!". Though I suspect that has a lot to do with most of the principal contributors being freelancers with "day jobs" that take precedence.

An Aparo DC/Marvel crossover would have been fabulous!
Brave&theBold vs. Team-Up!

Knut- I think it's best to consider the contributors of Twomorrows magazine publications as being more "volunteers" than "freelancers".
I look forward to DC's hardcover collections like this. My only concern is the "bait & switch" problem that has occurred with the Secret Society of Super Villains book, where it was solicited as a one volume complete big book, but arrived as a much smaller volume 1, at the same price. It's made me a bit concerned when dealing with these collections of more recent work, due to the different royalty agreement...
