Over the last 15+ years (maybe even longer) I've noticed that many fans and many fans turned pro tend to either completely misunderstand/wrongly remember character's they are using or a story they are referencing. My question to you guys is what past stories and what characters do you often see fans and fans turned pro either misunderstand or misinterpret?

One character and a particular story that comes to mind is Wolverine when he regenerated from a single drop of blood in an old UXM annual. At least one creator and a number of fans wrongly site this story as proof that Wolverine's healing factor is powerful enough to regenerate from a skeleton. They either forgot, misread, or misremembered that story. In that story, Wolverine regenerated from a single drop of blood by touching a mystical/cosmic crystal which magically regenerated his whole body.

Judging from the story that gave us "baby Val" in Fantastic Four (around #48 of the Heroes Return series), I think someone didn't understand what was meant by "she lost the baby" in FF #267.

Also, I'm curious what specific stories fans are thinking about when I hear stuff about how Jean Grey keeps dying and getting resurrected, Mary Jane was a 'spoiler' for Peter's romances, etc.

One of my favorite examples is Moon Knight. I loved him when written by Doug Moench but many writers since seem to think he is just insane. Mr Moench did touch on this during his run but it was never the focus later writers chose to make it.

I'm probably going too far in the wrong direction, but I wish we never
saw or heard about Tony Stark's drinking problem or Hank Pym's
Yellowjacket problems after their original stories. Both problems were
'solved' at the end of the original stories, but every body else had to
keep revisiting the topics until they had become the new standards for
these characters. Sad if you ask me. Lazy too.

Dark Knight Returns

First of all, I don't see it as an indication that Batman has mental issues, but some creators and fans seem to have taken that idea and run with it for the twenty-five or so years since it was published.

Second, I'm tired of people listing it as a perfect introduction to Batman. I like the story, but I see it as an "imaginary" future, best appreciated by those who have already read some stories of Batman in his prime. There are dozens of Batman stories I'd recommend to someone before I suggested DKR.

And I agree with what Rick mentioned about Wolverine.

I hate 2 things that have been done with Logan since the late 80s or so. First, a big part of the character's appeal was the mystery surrounding his past. Who thought it would be a good idea to REVEAL everything?

Second, yes he's always been able to heal better than most people, but now he's become virtually unkillable. Another big part of his appeal was his toughness. Toughness included taking risks, taking pain "like a man," etc. A guy who can't die isn't tough, because he's got nothing to worry about.

- Hank Pym, the wife beater.

- Tony Stark, the big time drunk.

- Dark Knight as the basis for Batman.

- Peter Parker "growing up with me".

- Superman the stupid boy scout.

Wow. With fans and writers like these, no wonder comics are in such a bad shape.

"Who thought it would be a good idea to REVEAL everything? "

The biggest problem for me was that the Wolverine Origin felt like the Star Wars prequels: It doesn't lead to the Wolverine we all knew. Without going into specifics, "Origin" seems like wasted opportunity. I half expected there to be an "out" where Old Man Logan turned out to be Wolverine.

Ooh! I've got an easy one!

Several writers didn't realize that the story behind Guardian's "resurrection" told in Alpha Flight #25 was intentionally impossible - Courtney-as-Mac said the explosion in AF#12 opened a portal in space and time for Mac. Meanwhile in AF#12 itself, you can clearly see Mac's body aflame muttering a strained "Heather" - so, no teleportation.
