Not to mention…

When I first read FF 13, that panel had a double effect on me. It blew my tiny mind, of course, but it also left me feeling totally discouraged, as I could not imagine a day would ever come when I would be able to draw something even half as amazing.

I have a question for JB regarding that great Stern/Byrne sequence in which Cap decapitates Baron Blood.

When a silhouetted Cap is drawing back his shield to do the deed, the panel caption reads "The deed is horrible to comprehend."

I've always wondered... shouldn't that have read "horrible to contemplate"?

Why?

As many of you already know, this was the page Shooter attempted to block, complaining that such shots "turn the last page into an ad for the next issue". Fortunately, wiser heads prevailed, mostly by asking why that would be considered a BAD thing?

(Years later, in SECRET WARS, Shooter attempted to get around this self-imposed "rule" by having someone run into a room announcing that Galactus was on the move. In movies and most comics, this -- telling rather than showing -- IS considered a BAD thing, but, of course, Shooter had been so vocal about his dislike of those last-page-splashes of the villain, he had painted himself into a corner.)

The above JB Magneto brings to mind an earlier Dave Cockrum...

Dave and I both went back to Kirby's earliest drawings of Magneto when coming up with our own interpretation.

It was a very odd way to end that issue.  It seemed almost like there was originally going to be another page following that one, with Galactus, but the creative team miscounted the number of story pages so the last page got chopped and the next issue caption placed at the bottom of the preceding page.

last-page splashes

Doubly funny, when I look back at how many times Stern and Romita Jr pulled that trick on Amazing Spider-Man. Mr Hyde, the mutated Tarantula, Hobgoblin, and Thunderball all made those kinds of cliff hanger entrances.

Eric Lund - great choice - that panel just screams "NEAL ADAMS!"

That comes through in spades. I appreciate in particular how your Magneto, JB, has the lines on his chest and cape back over his shoulders and the high thick belt over his abdomen -- all like Kirby's original in the first issue!

And... I heartily second a "huzzah" for Eric Lund's choice!
