I've heard a lot of people badmouth Frank Robbins' art, but I love it.

I can see how Robbins' art may be jarring to some people at first, but I grew up reading his Johnny Hazard stuff and have the original art of one of his 1969 Hazard Sundays over my desk. That stuff is effin gorgeous. He worked absolute magic with a brush (which is why it breaks my heart to see any of his work inked with the chicken-scratches of Vince Colletta).

Robbins shouldn't have been doing Invaders and Ghost Rider. He should have been doing Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD (writing/pencils/inks). He would have knocked that book out of the park.

Chad that two page Kamandi has always knocked my socks off. I just love everything about it, but especially the shadows on the waves effect there.

••

Note, one again, how Jack used "Kirby dots" for more than just fire and explosions. Here, the waves, as well as the brooding sky. I have even seen him use them for HAIR!!

I seriously regret disliking Robbins' Marvel work. Like Gene Colan, Robbins wasn't suited for regular superheroes.

It wasn't until I saw Robbins' THE SHADOW work did I realize how great he was as an artist. I actually prefer the Robbins Shadow issues to Kaluta's.

I would have loved to see Robbins art taking on some Spider-Man, though. I mean, with all the contortions Robbins put his figures into, why wouldn't that have worked for Spider-Man, if Robbins had to mess with superheroes at all. Of course, maybe he wanted to work on Cap books exclusively.

Would have LOVED Robbins work on Man-Thing, or WEREWOLF BY NIGHT.

Also, if Robbins could have arted at DC, I could see a great Demon comic from him, or Challengers of the Unknown, or Night Force, or something even crazier, like Swamp Thing.

I don't know if this counts, as it's more of a "movie" poster than anything, but this is a brilliant Hulk. The first time I saw this was in the Bullpen Bulletins back in the 1970s, I believe, and it was too "adult" a version of the Hulk. Really weird to my eyes, but I never forgot it.

Ironically, Stan really hated Big John's art in his issue and verbally tore it to shreds. I have to say that Stan was wrong there!
