In that final page from "Man of Steel" #1, who is the shadowy figure watching from the barn?

+++++++++++++

The scientist who created Metallo, as seen in SUPERMAN # 1.

The inability to understand this distinction, or, perhaps, the unwillingness to, as well as the insistence on putting the whole exercise over with the most cynical, dour veneer possible is what eventually alienated me from most modern comic book art and, essentially, the hobby. Ah, but they probably didn't need my $$ anyway.

John Buscema could sure draw a guy sitting on a throne!

I think it's because he knew how to draw characters and objects so that they look like they have mass and weight. Look at how much the shape and volume of Mephisto's body is not merely defined by lines but by shadow and highlights. Helps that it's not overly colored, a colorist trying to define the shape by adding gradients and highlights to every individual muscle group and fold in the cloth.

It's also the tiny details that make all the difference. the angle There's that slight angle that the upper torso is at in relation to the lower torso, it really sells the pose.
This and JB's remarks about Neal Adams brings to mind the documentary Crumb and something Robert Crumb said to his son who was drawing faces from a yearbook. The drawings looked technically accurate but the son complained that they still didn't look like the person enough. R. Crumb said that sometimes to make it look more accurate you have to exaggerate a bit. I agree completely, sometimes when you exaggerate you capture the spirit of the person, or whatever idea you're trying to convey, that can be lost when getting details one hundred percent right.

John Buscema could sure draw a guy sitting on a thrown!

••

Reminding me of the "backstage" story of the writer who, working with Buscema for the first time, wrote a splash with a big shot of a character front and center, dominating the shot, sitting on a throne.

When the art came in, Big John had drawn the figure in the middle distance, with another character in the foreground entering the room. "Why would he do that??" lamented the writer.

"Probably," said someone else, "because he doesn't like being told how to draw like John Buscema!"

This storyline, "The Defeat of Dr. Strange" is probably the pinnacle for the character. This is the one where Baron Mordo sends his astral ninjas to take out Strange and the Ancient One, with Mordo joining the chase in astral form, with Strange leading him in his astral form. They end up passing through the Earth, and fly into the sun! It's crazy, almost like a DC Comic by Bob Haney in the craziness.

A great image, showing off the kind of life the Hulk leads, in constantly being hounded and rootless.
