So my other guess for the figure in the Kent's barn is the creator of Metallo.

I think you could open any issue of Davis's Killraven series randomly, close your eyes and point to a panel, and it could likely be worthy of this thread.
He was just on fire in that series, and maybe even more so was Mark Farmer.

One of the most powerful panels of JB's FF run, and pointing out how effective white space can be in conveying emotion.

Exactly my thoughts, Mark. But I choose that one because is the first panel with Killraven.

…pointing out how effective white space can be in conveying emotion.•• Still, I will bet you will not be too terribly surprised to hear that some people complained about my "laziness", not drawing a background in that panel!

•• This is a classic example of something I have often cited: super-realist Neal Adams knowing exactly when it is appropriate to be UNrealistic -- as with the way the Batman's cowl contours to his neck muscles. And, of course, just a few pages earlier, that same cowl was attached, seamlessly, to his cape. Just thinking about something like that would probably make Alex Ross' head explode.

Well, that's because they're complete idiots.
Heck, that panel floating around in my subconscious is likely one of the reasons I ended up being a graphic designer.

JB, I was thinking something along those lines upon seeing that Adams Batman panel as well, but I concentrated on his face - Batman looks to be an actual demon there (especially given the unusual expression), the mask being a part of his face, instead of simply over it. It works to great effect, here.

In that final page from "Man of Steel" #1, who is the shadowy figure watching from the barn?
