You know, off the top of my head, I cannot think of any major Asian characters in Marvel. I'm sure there are, but... nothing.

Ok, so Mandarin is probably the most well known.  Then new Psylocke. Beyond them: Jubilee.  Silver Samurai.  Radioactive Man. Wong.  I feel like I've missed some obvious names...

You'd think Iron Fist could be Asian.  And the fact that he isn't certainly plays against stereotype.  But it reminds me of the Paul Mooney joke about "THE LAST SAMURAI" with Tom Cruise and he ponders (and I'm quoting), "what's next: 'the last nigger on earth' with Tom Hanks?

I'm sure the Marvel Universe versions of China, Japan, and other "Asian" nations are choc-a-bloc with super powered folks -- we just haven't had much occasion to visit those countries, have we?

I'm reminded of the Black writer who complained that there were no members of Alpha Flight who were of sub-Saharan African descent. Apparently he chose to overlook the fact that Canada's "major minority" groups were prominently represented, and that a Black member of the team would be a disproportionately HIGH representation, given how few Black people there are in Canada, as a percentage of the population.

Most Black people are too smart to live where it's so damn COLD all the time!!!

i thought Wolverine went running about Japan and Asia in his own book - tho' to Craig's point of "Major" asian chracters - none seemed to come from it i'm aware of -- of his list i think he only really missed Shang-Chi, Coleen Wing and maybe Sunfire or Karma, major only for being X-men connected.

Regarding J.B.`s mention of people in the U.K. calling their black cats or dogs the `N` word in days gone by,there has recently been a bit of controversy in the media over here about the remake of the Dambusters movie,Stephen Fry is writing the screenplay and has changed the name of Guy Gibson`s dog from Nigger to Digger. While this doesn`t bother me as i can see why he felt the need to change the name, many are complaining that it`s re-writing history and should be left as it was,as that is how things were in those days.

P.S. When i was an infant my nan had a black Old English Sheepdog called Blackie,i never thought his name was a slight on  black people,in fact they had a white cat called Chalky too. Also the lead singer of the group WASP is Blackie Lawless and i never assumed his name was a slight on black people.

When I was at University, when PC speech was running amuck, I once
suggested that the word "seminar" be changed to "ovular" in order to be
more inclusive. Most didn't get it.

It actually is pretty stupid. I said it during the height of the trend to make
sure no words on campus had any masculine connotations. They had
banned the words "chairman" and "manpower" and (stupidly)
"ombudsman". The school sport team, the "Vikings", was changed since
Vikings were all male.

"Seminar" - Semen
"Ovular" -Ovulate

Can't have those pesky masculine parts of words. Like I said, kind of
stupid.

PS. WHen I mentioned to a girl on campus (one of the ones who
spearheaded the change) why she did not like the team name "Vikings",
she replied that the term the school used for the female teams, "the
Viketts", was dumb. I agreed and then asked her why they didn't call
themselves the "Valkyries". She just stared at me.

I recall a booze ad that showed a Hot Babe dressed up as Napoleon, and framing copy that asked the question "What if history was herstory?"

A mangling of the English language such as can normally be found on Madison Avenue, alas, but my immediate response was "What if heritage was hisitage?"

Incidentally, remember how people who were on crutches or in wheelchairs used to be called "cripples", until this word was deemed pejorative, and replaced with "handicapped", until that was also deemed pejorative, and replaced with "disabled", which also fell from favor, to be replaced with "differently abled"?

I predict the same fate for "the N-Word" -- that term itself will become something it is not permissible to use!

Last year Jennifer Aniston drew criticism for calling herself a "retard."

Last week I saw a public service ad to stamp out the R-Word. What "r" stood for wasn't mentioned, but the ad featured a girl with Downs Syndrome.
