Oh, it doesn't seem like the news made it here yet. IDW announced that John starts his new series, Cold War, in September. Presumably it's set during the titular time period.

Oh ok, I was right it seems.

When I first conceived my "sequel" to JBNM, which happened about halfway into the original run, and was for something very different in scope and shape, Jazz was going to be the ONLY character from the series who "crossed over" into the new book.

Over the years, the idea has warped and morphed and generally transformed itself, but Jasmine's presence has remained the one constant!

**********

As the sequel idea morphed over the years, did the regular JBNM series get affected by any of these changes?

Very excited to hear there will be two ongoings after NEXT MEN.

As for "Nathan, I'm cold" - I've always assumed it would be one particular character but it's just smacked me in the face who it probably will be...

Nope. In fact, one of the truly remarkable things about "finishing" the series is that it has ended EXACTLY where and how I planned! I have spent the last week or so drawing and writing scenes that have been in my head for so long, it felt very much like I surely MUST have already drawn and written them years ago!

As I mentioned, the only "surprise" that came out of this "rebirth" of NEXT MEN was the death of Danny -- and that happened mostly because I realized, as I slid back into the pilot seat for the new series, that in all the elements that had been floating around in my head all these years, he had absolutely nothing to do! He was not part of the conclusion -- unlike Jazz, Nathan, Bethan, Jack and Tony -- and he was not part of the "sequel" in ANY of its forms. He simply was not there!!

Hm. Well, IDW WERE supposed to be letting me know when they planned to announce, so I could actually premiere the news here…

Ah, well. Yes, the new series is called COLD WAR, subtitled THE MICHAEL SWANN DOSSIER, and it's about a former MI6 agent who accepts the occasional "special assignment" from Her Majesty's Secret Service. Set during the titular time period, but (trust me on this!) NOT a history book!

JB, you've mentioned before the the dinosaur sequence would've gone on longer if you hadn't condensed the story-telling.  Would Danny's death have been dramatized had that been the case?  As it was, it was handled in exposition (though I like dream-Danny's reaction to his real death) and I wonder how it might've happened if you'd taken five issues in dinosaur land rather than one?

(At first, I thought Danny would be "saved" by Gil and the others plucking him out of dino-time, but clearly that's not the case.)

While I would have preferred JB's next project to be more superheroes, the Cold War gave us the super-spy, and I certainly look forward to his take on the latter.

As noted. Danny's death came as a "surprise" to me. At least, to the extent an author can REALLY be surprised by what happens in the story s/he tells!

If the 31st issue of JBNM had come out a month after the 30th, or even the three to six months I planned originally, Danny would not have died. His death was not part of the original structure.

So the question, at least for me, is what I would have done when I got to the end of the story, as I now have, and Danny was still there, with NOTHING TO DO!
