Every time I think of Claremontisms, it's always a line like this: "I love you, <fill in the name>." And then, "And I, you, <fill in the name>, with all my heart."

Well, Jason, I think what holds Claremont's X-Men to the 8th grade level is the way in which so many 8th graders, then and now, love body modification. And extreme mental coercion. And highly sexualized situations involving psychic bondage and leather fetish-garments. I can't count the number of times I've heard 8th grade hallway confrontations "with no quarter asked and none given," with their friends egging them on with "were your positions reversed, surely he would do the same to you!" Wait. None of that is true... Okay. Never mind. Jason, the critics you were listening to were morons.

At this time, it would be mine own heart's desire to see a thread opened up listing various Claremontisms.

I will admit, Claremont's writing irks me now, but as a kid I ate that stuff up. And yet, weirdly, Claremont was just never one of my favorites. Probably because of the whole X-Men thing becoming so popular and "robbing" me of a niche book I believed to be "mine." Another verbose dude is Bill Mantlo. And a writer who was probably a bit full of himself as well. And I denigrate the guy, but even today I'll pick up a Hulk comic I didn't own before, and it's the first comic I'll read and the best comic I'll enjoy that week. It helps that Sal Buscema is the artist on nearly everything good Mantlo ever wrote. ![](uploads/ChadCarter/2011-06-10_210123_hulk_farewell.jpg)
Say what else you want, but Mantlo on his game was good stuff!

This is a pretty good list. It doesn't include "chum" though which was a personal favorite of mine

I dug Mantlo on the Hulk, Rom, and the Micronauts. Overall, Alpha Flight notwithstanding, Mantlo's books were extremely enjoyable comics.

Good list of Claremont tropes, Jason. His overuse of certain themes and attitudes bother me even more, I think, than his stock phrases. Seriously, too many years of reading Claremont has completely ruined Heinlein for me. I positively recoil from that stuff now.

I still love The Menace From Earth, among many other Heinlein stories, but now, when I read the teenage female protagonist's words about her Mom and how she's "almost as smart as me", I think of Claremont.

I found myself thinking that current comics have too few words. When I select a comic book, I look forward to reading a story, not just looking through a picture book (although I love comic art).
To be honest, when I buy a trade, I want it to take me more time to read than it does, and I also don't care for the "extras" that appear at the end of the book. All too often in a trade I reach the end of the story when I have about 10 or more pages of "junk" at the end that I thought was more of the story.

I think "focused totality of her psychic powers" --- Ha!Another verbose dude is Bill Mantlo. --- All of the captions could be removed from the page you posted, and it would be just as (if not more) effective.

I guess the point of the thread was writer verbosity, whether we liked a certain writer for it or not. In this case, I like Mantlo's verbosity. I agree the scene might be more effective, wordless, but Mantlo is providing a eulogy. Every funeral has one.
