If they did recolor the FF Omnibus, is there anything you would do differently from the original color job?

••

If by "you" you mean me, I have not been asked to participate in this project.

I am very iffy on this recoloring thing.

Also, I have the originals hardbound.

Mebbe I will buy some original page and put the $ in JB´s pocket directly.

...looks like they fixed Ray's leg color above. I suppose that is a "plus"...?

To support the collection of JB's work in omnibus format, I have already preordered this volume on Amazon.  If the reproduction quality is better than the Visionaries series, I will be pleased.  (Approaching the reproduction heights of the Simonson Thor Omnibus is too much to expect, perhaps.)

But I am not entirely pleased with the story selection.  One omission in particular seems glaring in this context, even if they skipped it in the Visionaries volumes, too: JB's excellent story from What If #36 (December 1982)!  Why did the Frank Miller Daredevil Visionaries and Omnibus books get his What If stories, but we're deprived of JB's FF What If tale again here?  So we can get a Spider-Man crossover issue that JB had nothing to do with producing?  Very odd.

I think it would read great if "What if the Fantastic Four had not gained their Super-Powers?" were placed right after FF 250 (since 250 has a cover date of January 1983, right after FF 248 would be more proper if a strict publishing chronology was desired).  A nice transition from the two-issue Gladiator slugfest to the Negative Zone epic.

They did just reprint the first "Visionaries" volume with new coloring to replace the dot matrix look of the first printing -- perhaps that is a window into how the Omnibus will look.

That THOR splash --- Y'know, the first time I saw it, in publication, and even to this day, my brain wants to read that title as THOUGH HEL SHOULD BAR THE OY VAY!

(Not the right spelling, I know -- but that's what I see!!)

I'm hoping that issue of What If--? will be in the second volume!

++++++
I re-read the Spider-Man/FF issue in Vol. 0 (without the Peter Parker issue) and could follow it fine without having read the crossover.  In fact, this story could be a stand-alone since Mantlo and Byrne do an awesome job of filling in the details as they go.

That re-coloring looks great.  I like the fact that the pinks were changed to a variety of colors.

Yeah, including an issue in a creator themed Omnibus that the creator in question took no part in, is a questionable practice to me. Particularly when you take into account that the comics of this era were designed so it would be easy for the casual reader to follow and get up to speed on.

I have JB's run (including all the additional material listed) in the original comic format, the first six Visionaries trades and now digital. I'm becoming a fan of the coloring job Marvel's been doing lately with Tales of Asgard and Walt's omnibus, so if the coloring is on that level, I might very well pick this up as well. Though I might very well need a mighty lectern to support its massive weight...
