I found Hitch to be a competent Neal Adams clone... --- I still see Alan Davis (with lots of extra lines and scratches and seams and a bit of stiffness added) when I look at his work.

Mainstream audiences (those who don't necessarily read the comics) think of Cyborg as a major character thanks to his Super Powers and Teen Titans cartoon status, and I'm glad that DC finally realized that they can treat him like an A-lister.
Same for Static, who had a WB cartoon series for several years. It's a shame that DC never did much of anything to capitalize on the popular Static Shock! cartoon (I think there was a four-issue miniseries that was published during the cartoon's run), but better late than never, I guess. I'm sorry Dwayne McDuffie didn't get to see this.

I guess I should clarify my earlier post by stating that I do believe Bryan Hitch is a talented guy.Mainstream audiences (those who don't necessarily read the comics) think of Cyborg as a major character thanks to his Super Powers and Teen Titans cartoon status, and I'm glad that DC finally realized that they can treat him like an A-lister. I can follow that line of thought, and you're probably right. I still wish they had found a way to do something with Amazing Man instead though. I don't like the way the character was most recently handled in the JSA, but still think there's missed potential there, especially if DC is in change mode. Same for Static, who had a WB cartoon series for several years. It's a shame that DC never did much of anything to capitalize on the popular Static Shock! cartoon (I think there was a four-issue miniseries that was published during the cartoon's run), but better late than never, I guess. Those early John Paul Leon/Dwayne McDuffie issues of STATIC are excellent![/I} The cartoon (when you can catch it) is a lot of fun, too. I wish DC thought enough of the character to assign top notch talent to an monthly, ongoing STATIC comic book.

Well it should like Alan Davis since he sure copied enough of it!

"-Target audience of the new books is 14-54, but the target buying audience will be 18-34. ...Yeah, I'm not sure I follow the logic in that one, either."

That doesn't sound very...um consistent to me?

Target audience--those who read issues, whether big brother's, library copies, friend's books or their own. (Can 14 years buy online books without parents' permission, techinically?)Target buying audience--those who actually buy the book. At least that's my guess.

Cyborg in that roster raised my "tokenism" alarm.

"Token" implies that Cyborg isn't getting a shot at the big leagues based on his own merits as a character, or his own popularity. Again, from his appearance in animated cartoons over the past 25 years, he's got name recognition, he's been a fan-favorite for more than 30 years, and he's already been in the Justice League for the past year. If he were a brand-new character, I'd say that the cynicism is justified, but taking one of their most prominent African-American characters and giving him a bigger role than he's had before is a good thing.

And he was featured on Smallville, both Didio and Johns have been talking about wanting to get Cyborg more exposure for at least the last year, and Johns used him as an elder statesman of sorts in his own Titans run. I wouldn't call him a token anything character, in this instance, anymore than Wonder Woman is the group's token female, or Aquaman the token Atlantean.

This thread will be interesting to review in a years time to see if DC crashes and reverts, or it turns out they were right and this turns into the biggest thing seen in 50 years. (Or somewhere in-between.)
