I was late arriving at this thread.  A few stray thoughts:

I usually despise hard re-boots, just on general principle.  Since this is DC's zillionth re-boot, I dislike it about a zillion times as much as COIE.

I really hate new number ones----again, just on general principle.  Did Walt Simonson need Thor #1?  Did JB need FF #1?  Action, Superman, Detective, and Batman have been continuously published with their old numbering since the friggin' '30's.  Seems pretty silly to re-number them now.

Most of that artwork leaves me going "meh", except for Perez, of course.  He's always awesome.  His is probably the only title of the 52 that I'll buy.

The costume designs suck!  The only one that I actually like is Aquaman.  It's just a tweak of the original, and it works for me.

None of the writers have me excited, although I really enjoyed Perez' writing on Wonder Woman.

The whole thing has an "Ultimate Marvel/Tangent Universe/Age of Apocalypse" feel to it.  I'm not saying that DC is necessarily planning on going back to its current status quo after one year, but it would be a pretty good contingency plan if this whole thing tanks.

Prediction time: (1) At least 10 of the 52 titles won't last 10 issues, and they'll probably be the non-super-hero ones. (2) The remaining titles will themselves be re-tooled/re-booted at least twice over the next 4 years or so.  (3)  Even the good sellers will be get new number 1 issues around their 25th issues.  (<sigh>)

The whole thing just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.  I really hope that Marvel never does a company-wide re-boot.  They've screwed up so badly over the last few years...at least they've never pulled that particular lame-ass stunt.......

The Harley Quinn reinvention makes me run the other way from a character that I used to look forward to. Next thing you know, Prez will become a hand-axe-happy smack-junkie... because that's kewl too!

The "Hitler" youtube thing....  it's only funny if you do not understand German.  I understand a word or two, not even enough to hold the most basic of conversations though.

Bleeding Cool has had some interesting reportsfrom what they're calling the DC Comics roadshow. One bit that's been repeated a few times is:

 QUOTE:
Another change DC is making is that they won’t be ‘writing for the trade’ anymore. Writers have been told to write the story they want to write and not worry about the trade collecting. If they can tell a well-paced story in 4 issues, they’ve been told not to pad it to make it 6 issues. Editorial can worry about how it’s going to be collected. Going forward, books will be trade-collected depending on how the story fits. If a book has a 4-issue arc followed by a 3 issue arc, the trade will collect both. If it’s 2 4-issue arcs or 3 2-issue stories, those will get collected. As a side note, DC is looking into a new trade dress to represent the New 52 and a better spine design to call out information for fans.

I hope this is the beginning of the end of "writing for the trade" throughout the comic book industry.

@Adam

That's one of the best pieces of news to come out of the many announcements from DC. Maybe THE best.

Like him or not, it was being forced to "write for trade" that pushed Geoff Johns out of Marvel and into signing an exclusive with DC.  The "Red Zone" story he did for Avengers was originally written as a 3-issue storyline and editorial had him pad it to 6-issues to "make for a better trade."

Pixar has done an amazing job of capturing a broad audience with all-ages
material. Seems there's a lesson to be learned.

*************

Bryan (Ultimates) Hitch of all people tweeted something along those lines in the past week.  He said that his own kids didn't like his work and went on that Pixar and Dream Works Animation have been doing good jobs making stuff that both kids and adults could enjoy.  He finished up by saying he that in light of that he might have to rethink his own work.

Odd, since DC has been every bit as bad for having writers wite for the trade as Marvel, until now.

I was hoping that one of the positives to come out of the iPad thing would be more of an emphasis on single issues. That news is very encouraging.

---

My first regular DC book was Geoff Johns' Flash; I tried it because I recognized his name from "The Red Zone." One thing I really liked was that every issue I read, the opening narration boxes had a brief description of what was going on (to catch up readers who hadn't read the last issue) and they all ended with some variation of "I'm the Flash, the Fastest Man Alive!"

That certainly wasn't written for the trade, as I imagine it would get annoying to read it every 22 pages. Once a month though, to ease back into the book? Perfect! Where has that Geoff Johns gone?
