Ah. I took Giffen's comment as a compliment to JB's visual storytelling, as opposed to plots and characters.

Nice to see such an interest in Babs as Batgirl.

It's good to see that retailer confidence is high on the new 52. That is what really causes a sell-out. Sell through to the customers is a different issue entirely. The real test to all of this is how well these books are selling by issues 6 or 7. The hype will have more than settled by then and we will get a real look at who is actually reading these books as opposed to just buying them because they are new and shiny. Other questions that come to mind, will Jim Lee be doing more than 6 issues of Justice League? Is Johns going to stick with Aquaman? What will happen to titles that have massive drop offs when DC takes away their new discounts/return incentives for these books? Will this be successful enough that they keep their bigger discounts/return incentives as a permanent change? One thing is for sure, I've haven't paid this much attention to DC in years. With the 50% off discount my online retailer has been offering on the bundles of all 52 issues, I've stuck my toe into this water to see if it is worth the hype. Compare than to the 0 Marvel titles I buy a month and I'm in with DC for at least the next few months. However, stories and art have to really be top notch to keep me interested. Once the 50% off goes away for me, I will start picking and choosing which of the 52 I'll stick with. It's up to DC to try and keep that number as close to 52 as possible. I'll keep the two people interested in my reading habits up to date. ;)

Only if you assume some malicious intent. When Roy Thomas killed off Prof. X it wasnt a statement on his feelings about Stan Lee's work, personality or opinons.

I said this elsewhere. But I thought it would be appropriate to note in this thread as well an idea for an Aquaman reboot. I know Aquaman's gone through a few revamps. But one idea that has never been explored (to my knowledge) is the idea of Aqua-man as a Navy Seal: AquaGuard. I think this could be a cool way to kick-start the DC King of Atlantis, so long as they don’t get lost in the “gritty” side of the Navy. He could be introduced with some really interesting technological devices alongside his aquatic powers (so to be more versatile on land). And his ability to telepathically communicate with the ocean life, as well as being able swim the depths of the ocean, would make him the perfect espionage agent for the Navy.

Warren Ellis explains sell-out at the distributor level:
QUOTE:
What that means is, there were orders of X, and an “overprint” of Y, and enough shops sold out of X that they re-ordered from the stack of Y at the distributor’s, and the stack of Y was all ordered. So some comics shops will still have copies that they haven’t sold yet |

Maybe, but there are enough folks out there who don't understand what an announced "sell-out" means that it's good to toss out reminders once in awhile.

Someone correct me if I'm misremembering, but I recall JB remarking that when he was working on Superman someone pointed out to him that DC had "2 Supermen": the one in the comics, and the one they were marketing to the public at large. I was reminded of that looking at the ads in JL #1. I think there were three ads which were not "New 52" house ads, and two of these prominently featured Superman and Batman in their old looks. (The Batman actually showed the character in styles from several eras, but the shoe being advertised only had a 1970s-looking image on it.) Oops.
