Seriously! Outside Showcases and pre-Crisis back issues, I think I've bought less than a half-dozen DC books in the last two years.

I know this was directed at JT, but I have to comment. "Hated and feared" are the X-Men. It isn't the JLA. Never has been unless it's an Elseworlds story. Sorry, but although I can deal with apprehension from the civilian population regarding Batman, I can't with Superman and Wonder Woman. To me, it reads like DC saying "hated and feared" sells with Marvel, so let's change our flagship title to pull in some of those sales which, of course, totally disregards what the majority of DCU heroes have represented to the civilian population at large. ------------------------
INVISO TEXT (Click or highlight to reveal):
The first caption says, "There was a time when the world didn't call them its greatest heroes." 2nd caption, "There was a time when the world didn't know what a super-hero was." to me that suggests that this hunted stage is something that happened in the past. Today, they are seen as great heroes. |

Combining two posts (or subsets thereof) into one. JT Molloy: "Honestly, if you're truly addicted to superhero comics, why not just read back issues? That's what I started doing. There's SO many comics out there from yesteryear, why not replace what you'd be reading with new garbage with whatever you didn't read from the old days?" For some of us, there aren't too many back issues left to buy. :-/ Beyond that, there's just a desire to see stories featuring favorite characters where you don't know how it ends. Now yes, when dread overtakes anticipation, it's time to cut your losses, but hope springs eternal. JT: "Why do some people insist that you have to read something, sometimes ALL of it, which these days means spending $24 to hopefully even read the first "ARC" before you can just say this sucks."
For most, it's a matter of word choice. You can always say stuff like "not off to a good start," "doesn't seem like it's for me," etc. "This sucks" comes across as an uninformed declaration. For others, negative opinions aren't allowed. If you are buying it, you get "why are you buying it if you don't like it?" If you're not buying it, you get "How do you know if it's bad if you're not buying it?" All part of the joys of message boarding it. :-)

Its a hit at my local LCS. They had a launch party at Midnight last night along with 52% off back issues, food, and an oral reading of Justice League #1 with different customers reading different parts. I would have gone but my baby girl had shots yesterday and I was too tired. Went to the store today and the owner said that people he's never seen before have come in today to check it out, he had a few lapsed readers looking around and asking questions about the new 52, and three people opened subscription boxes (pull lists) to get some of the new titles. The store has a few other cool things involving the relaunch planned and many of the comic fans that frequent the store and live in the area are looking forward to the new stuff. Can everything still crash and burn? Sure and while the store has never had any financial troubles even in the recent economy, it's nice to see the energy surround the relaunch and its fun discussing the pros and cons with other customers. Even if someone comes in and doesn't like the new Aquaman title but sees Invincible, Hellboy, Usagi Yojimbo, or any other title and gives the store business then DC's move will have been worth it.

Just by bringing in new readers or lapsed readers, they're going to see everything that's for sale. Odds are that they'll buy something while there, even if it's not a DC comic.

Anyone remember Legends??????? ----------------------- Other than Darkseid being the villain; this story is nothing like Legends. In Legends, Darkseid sought to destroy concept of heroes or of legends, which included turning mankind against their heroes. That's not what is going on here. So far, it's just cynical and/or corrupt humans. (At least not yet. Can't say what willl happen later.) Let's face it; in our culture we love to tear down anyone who rises to the top. It is a multi-billion dollar buisness. So, we don't need a Darkseid to get that ball rolling. But if you read the above spoiler, you can see where this ends.

Re: Keith Giffen. He talks a good game, but I remember how he declared JB as a great storyteller. Then not long after in his Doom Patrol, the first thing he did was have Nudge and Grunt turned into ground meat ...

Read Justice League #1 last night...
Y'know, if they actually managed to get it into the hands of civilians, it wasn't a bad overall first issue. Yes, I know it's not like OUR traditional comics, with the done in one, whole team appearing in the first issue kind of story. But it felt like a pilot to a TV series, which I think more people would feel comfortable and familiar with.
Now, this still leaves questions, including how to get it into the hands of civilians. Also, how many people are willing to spend 24 bucks for one story? Etc etc (as we've all discussed these topics quite a bit on this board and in this thread).
One thing I'll say I really like about this relaunch, and it took me until it started to realize this, but... I'm no longer an expert. If someone I know who doesn't read comics reads Justice League #1 and asks me about who this guy is or what that guy is going to be... well, of course I can guess, but really, we're both at the same ground floor right now. I'm kind of oddly digging the sense of discovery even though I should know better (in more than one sense!).

I haven't read Doom Patrol since JB did it, but what's one got to do with the other?
