…the industry seemed to be declining before the suicide…

Yet my question remains unanswered - assuming comics are sold in new markets (or at least go back to the old markets, some of which were actual markets) what number can we expect the top selling comic to sell - 200,000?  300,000?

I just don't think, for whatever reason, that comics will go back to being a regular multi-hundred thousand copies sold hobby.

Digital is the bigger news if you ask me.  Well overdue.

Brad,

I agree the digital is the bigger news. I'm curious if the digital same day release will be for first issues only.

Derek, I don't think comics can ever approach those numbers again in a traditional monthly format. Newsstands are dying and even the dying newsstands don't want to carry comics anymore. They haven't wanted to for years.

The only way I see the numbers getting better is if Marvel and DC get their acts together and promote their digital programs. This is the only way I see kids getting back into comics. I think the possibility is very high if they can simply market and promote digital properly. Look at how popular reading books on digital devices has gotten in such a short time. Comics are an even better fit to this format.

Same day digital release for all DC Universe issues starting with the first issues.

What's the over/under in terms of time until Marvel makes a similar announcement?

I hope the digital release of comics works for DC (and eventually for Marvel) and that readership goes up.  I'm disappointed that they're doing it with yet another BIG EVENT to artificially drive up sales for a short period of time.  The big event mentality of the Big Two has finally broken my camel's back.  I'm done with DC as of this summer.  How long until I say the same of Marvel remains to be seen.

Well... I'm in for a few of those issues in September.

What's the over/under on Superman and Lois still being married in September? Or her even knowing who he is? Is Robin going to be Tim Drake, with Dick back as Nightwing, or are they going all the way to making Dick Robin again? I think they're going to make Dick/Donna/Wally/Speedy all 20 again, so Bruce/Clark/Diana/Hal and Ollie can all be about 30, and then they'll still have a younger Teen Titans with Tim/Conner/Cassie at about 14-15 years old. That's my guess.

Who knows? Piqued my interest though.

Digital has a big hurdle, and publishing hasn't figured a way to actually make money off of it that would sustain it without the print side subsidizing the costs. Newspapers are suffering, but few have made the transition to being totally digital because the money making paradigm is not there to actually pay the salaries of the reporters and such. A digital presence is practically mandatory as an alternate revenue stream and support to the print media, but it's not strong enough to survive on its own.

I think for digital comics to succeed is you need Diamond to go digital. I buy cable from a provider. I may pay extra for a few popular or extra channels, but I write one check to one company each month and then watch as much as I want. I'm not going to buy individual issues as they come out even at a quarter of the print cost. But, I might pay $50 a month to read the entire library of comics that DC and Marvel put out including access to back issues. The mindset needs to be that it's a service/access and convenience that the publisher is selling and the customer is buying NOT the physical product.
