Yeah, Max Lord's JLA had UN standing, but it was more like a nation (they had embassies and diplomatic immunity) then UN organization like WHO or UN military. Plus since it is long since gone, I consider it unsuccessful.

I agree with your point, but it should be pointed out that the Archie superheroes were just licensed to DC, and Archie Comics still owns the characters.

My recollection was the embassies were UN properties and not like actual National Embassies and were considered international territory like the UN HQ. I seem to recall the old JLAofA had UN connections as well. But the JL(AEIOU) tends to get disbanded and revamped alot. Especially in recent years.

I'm glad the Spirit isn't then. As for the Archie characters, I enjoyed it more years ago when DC used them but had them in a seperate line, Impact, rather than integrated into the DCU.

Must admit, I really enjoyed The Fly from the DC/Impact line. Great Mike Parobeck artwork!

I loved Mike Parobeck's work. I miss it. He died way too young. His work on The Fly and on Justice Society was perfect for those titles. Clean, crisp, old-fashioned but modern at the same time.

The subsumed Charlton characters easily filled niches in the DC Universe. Captain Atom was the super-patriot. Blue Beetle became comedy relief. The Question took up the role of the detective that Ninja Batman abandoned. It didn't do the characters any good; they became permanent second-stringers. But they made DC's B-team more interesting.
I don't think the Wildstorm characters will fit into the DC Universe. They are as hard-bitten and cynical as "super-heroes" come. It was no accident that their most successful stories were written by Alan Moore and Warren Ellis. What's more likely is that the DC Universe itself will change to fit them instead.

DC just screwed the Blue Beetle all to hell. He was never "comedy relief" until he appeared alongside Booter Gold in the JL. Then about as abruptly in comic book years he was the subject of a horrific death that somehow spurred the DCU heroes to action. Sorry, but in hindsight, he would have been better off left alone than given the fate he had once incorporated into the DCU.

They didn't do any better by Peacemaker, Captain Atom, Judo Master, or the Question. Or the the Fawcett bunch(Spy Smasher, Bulletman, the Marvel family) or the Quality bunch (Human Bomb, Doll Man, Black Condor, Phantom Lady, Kid Eternity, Red Bee, etc.).
They all pretty much got used for shit wipes and fire wood.
And DC liked Stormwatch/Authority so much they even cloned 'em. Remember "the Elite" ?

Not to turn this into a pre-crisis vs. post crisis topic, but did anyone on the forum have any problem understanding the mutiverse idea of E-1, E-2, E-3, E-X, E-S, etc.? Even from a young age when I first encountered the JLA/JSA crossovers, the mutiple earths stuff was perfectly understandable and actually kind of neat. Ever since Crisis it seems to me DC has been trying to iron out the inconsistancies and contraditions of 50+ years of stories, where the most efficient method would have been to keep the multiple earths.

Stormwatch is not the Authority or vis versa. Yes, they shared some members and the later spun out of the former, but they are two very different teams. The former is basically the world's police force and the later were earth's benevolant self-proclaimed rulers and defenders. So while the Elite is a clone of the Authority, it isn't a clone of Stormwatch.
