Look at the other pics on that page; when in an action shot, it
obviously not armor (nor does it look like armor in this shot. Well
maybe the shield with the reflective sparkles.) And in the page, he
does look like super-hero.

And losing the trunks isn't so bad. Even wrestlers have mostly
stopped using that style of trunks; makes the costume look dated.
(Yes, something can be iconic and still look dated.)

I've never understood the trunk dislike. I've always figured it's just how Superheros look. When I was a kid, I'd just put shorts over sweets along with a towel for a cape and pretend I was Superman or Batman. Fun stuff.

I dislike this new Superman look very much. I can't imagine any artist wanting all those inseams and funky boots to draw each panel. Just more shit to slow you down. I guess it's like our Star Trek discussions, making things more complicated instead of easier. I'm glad these guys don't work at Apple.

Check this out:

Crop that picture below the chest emblem and there is nothing here that suggests Superman.  Very bad.  My first guess would be Magneto.

WTF is it with these guys wanting to have Superman's belt have the shield shape on it too? I think it looks like shit, the oval looks smoother and better to my eyes.

I'm glad these guys don't design kitchen appliances.

He looks like some evil version of Superman from a parallel universe.

Irony?

That interview with McFarlane may be the only time he's said anything that wasn't in the language Douche.

As for Superman: fundamentally, there's nothing wrong with Superman being more contentious with law and order, if that's the way to revitalize interest in the character. There is a precedent with the 1930s Superman, a Randian type with some violence thrown in. I don't believe Superman should be a thug, but a more judgemental Superman could be interesting. Certainly the last watershed moments in recent comics, KINGDOM COME, used the idea of a judgemental Superman as a more human and thus more fallible.

I mean, I agree with the notion, proposed by JB, of a lower-powered, fallible Superman. Add to it the strain of responsibility, and Superman becomes a character with more weight on his shoulders than ever. The "Spider-Man"izing of Superman. Which I don't see a problem with, as long as it's more in line with Spider-Man from the 1960s-1970s-early 1980s.

The new Superman costume is a POS. Jim Lee is a hack, as I've said before. Nobody listens, but here's the thing: Lee stopped caring years ago. And I know from experience, when you stop caring about your creative output, you fall back on creative output you did years before. It's like artists' arrested development. All Lee managed to do was apply his sh*t costume design sense from 1999 to Superman and the rest of these characters. And his design of Superman is heinous. It's the ultimate Bad Idea Jeans moment in Superman history, for sure.

it's some kind of Facist diety.

Exactly what I expected would happen if ever the Image boys took over the
world.

McFarlane's points about rolling out a few books a month is pretty genius. If DC's entire line for September was 10 books - Action, Detective, JLA, Demon Knights, Mr. Terrific, Swamp Thing, Hawkman, Animal Man, Teen Titans, and All-Star Western, then I guarantee that the non-big name titles there would sell DOUBLE what they're going to sell this September against 51 other titles. In fact, I bet a lot of people would buy EVERY book the first month, because it's only ten books for the entire line that month.

Then, in October, release Wonder Woman, Blue Beetle, Justice League Dark, Grifter, etc. Keep Superman and Batman for November and December. DC would totally dominate sales for those months.

You know, it's not often I agree with Todd McFarlane, but in this case... the guy makes a LOT of sense.

Kip, how long have you thought trunks were outdated for superheroes?
Or is this a case of DC eliminating them on some iconic hero
costumes and you justifying it with a comment about being outdated?
Curious which came first.
