I think, since they claim to be keeping most of the Bat continuity, Bruce has had 5 Robins in the 5 years then.. 1) Dick 2) Jason 3) Tim 4) Stephanie Brown and now 5) Damien.

Yikes! That's what Robin gets for wearing a red shirt I suppose.

All those heart to heart stories about the connection Bruce has as a father sure do ring true now that we know he, at most, fosters these kids for about 8 to 12 months at most.

I think people who are prejudging his Action, should bear in mind that he's doing 'early superman' while Perez does the 'current' superman. As one of the people on the list who like Grant Morrison *and* John Byrne, I think it'll be interesting to see how he does it. I'm more worried by Perez's armoured 'current' Superman, than Morrison's home made costume 'early one', in terms of divergence from classic costuming. Simon BJ

Yeah, I think it will be interesting to see Superman portrayed as he was originally (though I've only seen a few scans from those early issues, he seemed more of a rogueish vigilante than the infallible good guy he's become). Shame about the costume, though.

Grant Morrison: "Things are going down dramatically every month in superhero comics. The comics themselves are much better written and drawn than they've ever been, but kids don't really buy them anymore. They can get them for free online."Grant Morrison: "I always preferred the DC characters. They always seemed closer in spirit to the pantheon and gods of various cultures. They were very pure. Batman is Hades or Pluto or any of these underworld gods. Aquaman is Neptune" *** That interview makes Morrison sound like one of the least interesting and least insightful dopes to ever work in comics. And he has 400 pages of that drivel to sell in his new book? Buyer beware!

Ha! Yeah. OK. Whatever. What's funny about Morrison's statements too is that if you ask most fans today what their top-10 favorite stories of all-time are, 9 of those stories will invariably be ones written 20+ years ago. Something I brought up elsewhere was the lack of defining stories of this era of comics. Where's the Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and The Dark Phoenix Saga of today? Honestly the last story I can think of that said something about something and I would definie as truly classic was Kingdom Come, and that was 15 years ago. Don't get me wrong - there are good, quality comics being produced today. But I don't think comics are nearly as good as they once were.

And you're right to think it.

Most of the stuff that's been characterized as "classic" from the last 20 years has been stuff like Kingdom Come, New Frontier, All-Star Superman, Planetary... which totally fit the mold of Watchmen and Dark Knight. Alternate tales using alternate versions of heroes or future/historical timelines.
I see no shortage of stories like that.
My problem is, there's no John Byrne FF, or Walt Simonson Thor, or runs of characters that respect what came before and just play around with the toys without breaking them. Everything these days is about breaking - inspired by Watchmen and Dark Knight - including the regular continuity of the main lines.
There's no alternative to alternative universes. There's no world where Cap is Steve Rogers and Bucky is dead, where Hulk is the strongest one there is, where Batman and Robin are Batman and Robin, not Batmen and Robins. It's all just one big damn mess.
