Excuse the tangent, but JB can you say why Kirby drew the cover with Cyclops' visor obscured by his eye beam?

••

Artistic license, I would guess. Scott is drawn that way several times over the first few issues, including one panel in which his whole HEAD is obscured by the beam!

"My" X-Men:

late 1970's; I first read a Marvel Treasury-sized reprint of the "Marvel Team-Up" #4 story with the original team of the X-Men. The next time I read a story featuring the team, it was a reprint of "(Uncanny) X-Men" #3 from the collection "Marvel's Greatest Battles." The very first then-new X-Men story I read was "Uncanny X-Men" #123. The line-up for that period was:

Cyclops
Storm
Colossus
Wolverine
Nightcrawler

Banshee had just left the team due to losing his sonic scream.

My first issue:

I think I also read the next issue, and then that was pretty much it.  I didn't read any X-MEN again until years later when I bought a ton of back issues.

I was kind of a latecomer to the X-men my first issue was around the 240's so the team was

-Storm
-Wolverine
-Havok
-Colossus
-Rogue
-Dazzler
-Psylocke
-Longshot

of course there were other X-books at the time made up of ex-X-men
X-factor had the original team
-Cyclops
-Iceman
-Beast
-Angel (Archangel at the time)
-Marvel Girl

and eXcalibur had
-Nightcrawler
-Shadowcat
-Phoenix (Rachel Summers)
-Captain Britain
-Meggan (no code name, watch out evil doers here comes Meggan)

First issue: Uncanny X-Men 201.

Lineup: Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Rachel Summers. Cyclops left in that issue. Prof. X had disappeared in the previous issue. Magneto was there as an "ally."

That may have been my first issue, but as I read older stuff I came to realize that I had met the X-Men at the end of their greatness. My favorite X-Men stuff now is the JB/Claremont/ Austin run. Other stuff that I still feel holds up well is the Lousie Simonson X-Factor period and the early issues of Excalibur. I continued to read X-Men for years, but I have no desire to ever go back and reread any of the stuff that came after issue 200 or so.

1987: Fantastic Four Vs. the X-men

Storm (powerless)
Wolverine
Magneto
Havok
Psylocke
Rogue
Dazzler
Longshot

Shown injured but not active:
Shadowcat
Colossus
Nightcrawler

To me Havok was the most appealing, but Colossus and Nightcrawler were super mysterious and exciting lying near death's door in a single panel.

X-Men # 153 was my first issue -- Kitty's Fairy Tale to Illyana -- was I ever lost.

My first encounter with the team was in Rom, though.  So my X-Men were:

Storm
Kitty
Wolverine
Nightcrawler
Colossus
Cyclops (shortly therafter)

The first time I read the X-Men was in a 1981 Swedish anthology book called Atlantic Special. It contained Unncanny X-Men 101, 103, 104 and and issue of Ironman. X-men issue 102 was fetured in the NEXT issue of Atlantic Special. Tlak about a confused reading experience....not only the missing issue, BUT X-men 101 starts with the space shuttle crashing and this Cyclops charcater talking about some woman named Jean being in the cockpit.

Banshee
Colossus
Cyclops
Nightcrawler
Storm
Wolverine
Professor X

...and Jean Gray.

The book came with a short description of all the X-men but did not list this Jean Gray woman who burst out of water saying she was Phoenix and later ended up in a hospital.

So for quite a while I did not think of her as an X-men member.

The Original X-Men

My first encounter with them was in Marvel Collectors Item Classics. It reprinted Fantastic Four #28.

X-Men 226, during the Fall of the Mutants crossover.  About as new-reader unfriendly as you could get, but I was intrigued enough by all the weirdness and new characters and backstories to stick around for quite a while.

Chris Claremont, Marc Silvestri, Dan Green, and Tom Orzechowski...maybe Glynis Wein as the colorist?  (I must be slipping.)

Wolverine, Storm, Havok, Colossus, Longshot, Psylocke, Dazzler, Rogue, Madelyne Pryor, and Forge was hanging out with Storm...pretty weird group, but I liked it.
