Someone asked why is there politics in  comics?  Marvel Comics wouldn't exist without them.  The FF's origin originally "let's beat the Commies into space."  The Hulk quickly dealt with Russian spies.  (All spy stories involving agents of the gov't have political messages, even if it is as simple as US good, Russia/Nazi/etc bad.)

And Captain America was political from day one.

As long as Superman has the words "American Way" attached to him, and as often as he is posed with the American Flag, there is a poltical message.

Gee, Tim, maybe you should change your title to "Byrne Robotics INSecurity".  Apparently, accepting personal responsibility for unintended consequences is something you frown on.  I believe I called for a cessation of hostilities in the post from which you partially quoted, so you can hardly accuse me of trying to "...(drag) this into the next day...".

As for "...calling him in...", as you put it, I was merely surprised, and a bit disappointed, that Mike had not contributed to a thread the topic of which seemed practically tailor-made for him; that his sole participation thus far took the form of a tired and erroneous slam at me is regrettable.

Now, I'll rephrase my request: can we all play nice, and please not further turn JB's sandbox into a litter box?

It defines what constitutes a citizen is, and being a baby from outerspace is not part of the criteria...so yes.

Though it is moot as in 1974, he was granted citizenship status of all United Nations member countries. So now I guess it is everyone BUT the United States.

(Sorry about the hotlink. I didn't know about that rule and the preview worked.)

Altho, when I was art robot on ACTION COMICS a while back, I was handed a script in which his heat vision was played exactly as if he WAS Cyclops -- battling Black Adam, Superman used his heat vision for concussive effect!

Netflix Superman/Shazam The Return of Black Adam (@16:36 mark) they made it a cartoon. I'm pretty sure they did the same thing in the Supergirl cartoon too.

I think I was remembering that 1974 story -- I wondered why not have the UN make Superman a citizen of the Earth -- rather than renouncing one country's citizenship.

Where does this American shame come from? Seems to be a recent trend, and I don't understand it.

I think its been around awhile on the ultra-left progressive side, but it recently kicked into high gear starting with Obama's World Apology Tour. However, the real scary thing is that its now creeping into middle and high school history books!

Last year I could not believe what I read in my daughter's 6th grade US history book. In a nutshell, there was a chapter talking about the causes of WW2 and the author went out of (his) way to justify Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and to decry the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as unnecessary and based in racism. Very little was mentioned about Japan's enslavement of the conquered people of Korea and Manchuria and NOTHING was mentioned about the cruelties of the Bataan Death march.

Bill Conway - able to go from zero to 60 on the bizarre slam of Obama like he was a Porche built especially for that purpose.

If I may, i'd give my point of view. It use the american shame, but it's not aimed to america, as for itself, but as america, being a country (among others), with laws and such things as borders, culture and history.

This ideology want to cross country, continents, and want to turn it into economical markets and aeras.

When you see Arnold (and don’t get me wrong, i love his movies), after being Governator (of the US) now planning to go for the lead of the EU, i can only understand this as people being american when needed, and european when needed. So with no loyalty.

Break the country, wich mean, break the link that connect people, who gets them to go beyond their origins and difference but unite them to a same goal, and then you get individuals, lonely custumers.

And someone who feel lonely must have needs, to fill his emptyness.
The need is filled by buying. Anything.

Money money money.

For me, whether Superman fights for the American Way isn't even an issue anymore.

Telling good stories should be 'the issue' since Superman has been unreadable for over ten years. I'd say since JB left but I stuck with the book for a few years after and it was pretty good. But the past ten years have seen some really bad, shameful stuff. I've tried reading the book a few times and the random issues I picked up were so awful, I threw them away... in the garbage. And I come from a time when throwing away a comic -- any comic -- would have been sacrilege.

I couldn't even summon up the courage to give them away.
