My daughter asked me a question I really couldn't answer.

What is the point of Wonder Woman's airplane being invisible if she is still visible inside it?

I never really thought about it before, but it has me stumped.

I love these questions our kids ask us. The other day, my daughter asked me if a lightsaber could damage Mjolnir. ( I said no.)

I don't believe I've ever seen anything in the comics that explained why her jet is invisible or where it came from.  I read the whole SHOWCASE PRESENTS WONDER WOMAN volume and got nothing.  Also as I recall it was never referred to as being invisible.  It was known as her "robot jet" or something like that.

That's one of the reasons I liked the Perez dumped the jet and just let Diana fly under her own power.

Although I did like the shape shifting "jet" JB gave her in his run.

"She never flew before the Perez reboot?"

*********

Nope.  At least not in the Showcase volume I read.  She could "glide on wind currents" but not fly on her own.  Sometimes it seemed just as good as flying depending on what the story needed I guess.

I do think the invisible plane is one of those things that's so strange it demands an explanation.  Like when someone gives their kid a really odd name the first thing I always ask is, "Oh where did that name come from?" because I assume there must be a story behind it.  That's what the invisible plane does for me.  Invisible plane?  Where'd that come from?  Why is it invisible?  And like I said, since it's never even mentioned in the old Silver Age comics it drives me even crazier!  You're shown in the art that it's invisible but you get no further information!  Ah!

The point oof it being invisible is so Diana can hide it-- not hide in it.

I think it's just comicbook shorthand to show our hero in the jet as it's going along. Otherwise you'd just have nothing on the panel. That was always the way I thought about it, nothing more.

I thought it was invisible so no man could follow her back to Paradise Island.

I remember being a kid and seeing a picture of a plane's cockpit for the first time. It was a mess of dials, meters, switches, levers and buttons.

And I wondered, how can Wonder Woman fly her plane if she can't see any of the controls.

And what a list of names that aircraft had...

Invisible plane
Invisible jet
Invisible robot plane
Robot plane
Transparent plane
Transparent jet

What was the deal with this airplane anyway?
