I bought "Superman" (vol. 2) #1 because is was by JB, period. I was part of that "Faithful Fifty-Thousand." There wasn't any comic book that JB had worked on, especially as an artist, that I didn't want to buy.

Bought Superman (vol. 2) #1 in a German oversized edition (approx. ledger size). It reprinted the American Superman #1 and #2. It was good value for money and I bought it because of the exciting prospect of reading Superman's adventures from the beginning without the shackles of too much previous continuity.

The artwork really profited from the size and the paper stock was shiny magazine-style, so the coloring benefitted. Great story, great art and I loved Terry Austin's inks. Most German reprints at the time were smaller size than the American originals, so dialogue and exposition were much simplified.

Edit: Correction.

For me, that issue was weird, but not for the reason you think.  I had taken two years or so off from comics, so I never saw Crisis or MOS.

So I picked up the issue and was puzzled by several things in it that didn't line-up with the Superman I last saw.

But it totally intrigued me and I quickly caught up.

So, why did I buy the issue?  I can't remember; but John Byrne was probably the main reason.

"Why did you buy SUPERMAN VOL. 2 #1 back in 1987?"

****

Because it was by JB.

That shop owner had already has his first issue of the "New Superman"six months previous with MAN OF STEEL #1--which featured not one, but TWO very first issue-y covers.

I bought SUPERMAN #1 because I loved Superman and Byrne. How could I go wrong? Plus I'd already been reading for 6 months with MOS.

I didn't get a copy of Superman #1 until after I'd had a copy of Superman #2 ("The Secret REVEALED!") which I thought was an INCREDIBLE story!

When I finally got a copy of #1 a few weeks later, I liked it, but thought #2 had upped the ante to such a degree, #1 didn't live up.

Byrne on Superman was probably my most exciting time as comic book reader in those days. Would have been perfect if Austin had done all the interiors as well, and the run would have lasted 10 years.

That particular cover stands out because I spent more time looking at it than I spent reading and re-reading an entire comic book on average.

Three VERY GOOD reasons: Superman, John Byrne, and Terry Austin.  The fact that it was a feckin' GREAT read was icing on the cake; the ten copies I bought were well worth the money spent.

JB, if that store you visited is even still in business, can you give us a hint as to its current location?  I'd like to avoid patronizing such an establishment.

Didn't MOS come out twice a month?

In any case, I bought it because of John Byrne. I followed him everywhere!
