That pretty much puts the lie to it right there, no?  No matter if it was never intended, wasn't what Shooter wanted or couldn't be redrawn (highly unlikely given everything JB has said), what happened after that issue is what sadly made Hank an abuser.  If Shooter had the power of his convictions, it could have, would have been dealt with in a different manner. That it wasn't makes Shooter's comments feel like backsliding 30 years after the fact.

Especially sad that Shooter chooses to blame the ARTIST for not getting
the point across -- wonder how he'd react if he were called out on his BS!

Don't know if Shooter will respond, of course, but readers can comment on the article.

When comments are polite i noticed comics pros take sometime the time to answer. :)

Perhaps, Stéphane. I'm curious to see if anyone else will respond.

Here's a sequence from the following issue, #214.

It seems even if Shooter didn't mean for Hank to hit Janet, he evidently meant for her to be hit hard enough to get a "shiner." Btw, having one character strike another character accidentally in the face, yet hard enough to cause injury doesn't strike me as the easiest thing to convey in a comic book.

Shooter's comments about a "right cross" are also interesting, given that Hank backhanded Janet using his left hand.

There's also this panel that occurs a few panels before the backhanded slap.

Is Hank trying to squash Janet here or is he just striking the table in frustration?

If I had a profile that would let me post in the comments on the article I'd reply to Paulo's "can someone explain that?" post there with:

I can.  Jim Shooter is full of shit.

I know drawing and writing comic books is such a dream job and a very hard field to crack into, so once you're in and you do well, you're in, and we got some of the best comics that are still being talked about to this day during Shooter's tenure, but damn, how did you guys work for this guy JB???

It was this storyline that made me drop Marvel Comics altogether. They permanently lost me as a buyer/reader.

Ok, so the Avengers battle Ultron, Count Nefaria, Attuma, the Super-Adaptoid, the Absorbing Man...these are all-out slug-fests and except for the occasional torn costume, no one ever gets bruises or a "shiner"...except when THE WRITER WANTS IT TO HAPPEN...am I right?

Hank Pym is one of my favorite characters, as my avatar might give away.  And one of the things that I like about him is his complexity.  It's easy to call him a "wife beater," but there's more to it than that.  He was human, with all the strengths and weaknesses that entails.  He was flawed, no doubt about it.  But that's what made him an interesting character.  He was more than just a two-dimensional "good guy."  His relationship with Jan was complex -- they clearly loved each other, but yet at the same time they could not live with each other.  There was something very moving and real about that.

...they could not live with each other.

Only because that's how they were written.
