Recently re-reading some old issues of ASM, I noticed in a letters column that the editorial staff asserted Stan Lee had ordered Gwen Stacy to be brought back, just that command and nothing else, after which those responsible for the comicbook at the time devised the clone idea.
So, here's a question: if you had to bring back Gwen Stacy as per Stan's decree, how would you have done it? (Please don't answer "I would not have.")
Secondary questions: is it true that Stan Lee ordered this -- and, as the letters column further claimed, in response to a deluge of fan mail requests?

…is it true that Stan Lee ordered this…•• Not to my knowledge. Let me ask around. ++ …and, as the letters column further claimed, in response to a deluge of fan mail requests? •• What has Stan said about giving fans what they think they want?

I know! Really caught me by surprise -- so much that I... don't believe it!

ignoring the obvious response of I wouldn't and they didn't either.
If given the editorial edict that i would have to bring her back, I think they handled it well...mysterious appearances of a girl that looks just like a lost love...increasing in frequency as our hero starts to doubt his sanity...the clone saga...the original was fun read.

If anyone wants to check out the letters column, it's issue #149.

I'd probably use a "One More Day" type deal, except with the Shaper of Worlds rather than Mephisto.

I would have had revealed in a retcon that Gwen had never died. It was an elobrate hoax. The Goblin in league with Mysterio and the Chameleon kidnap Gwen. The Chameleon disguise's himself as Gwen and Mysterio uses his special effects to simulate Gwen's death.

I would have done something similar to Anthony's suggestion. Neither Gwen nor Osborn "really" died at all, through trickery and special effects. Mysterio and a couple of SHIELD LMDs would do the trick. I like Anthony's suggestion of including the Chameleon. Nice touch.

Here's the letter column that Michael is referring to: ![](uploads/MattReed/2011-03-22_100722_ASM_149_Letter_Column.JPG)
And just in case you can't read it, here is the specific letter and response that prompted this thread: ![](uploads/MattReed/2011-03-22_100821_ASM_149_Letter.JPG)

Excellent, Matt! Thank you!
I recall that all the many issues showing and then explaining Gwen Stacy's death were quite insistent that, no, this is NO TRICK -- the real Gwen Stacy is REALLY dead. So, the "hoax" alternative... it's hard to imagine they wanted to go back on their word in that way. I suppose, they might have used their clone explanation but revealed that she and not the real Gwen had been killed.... so that what they had said was true -- "from a certain point of view."
