Jon, you also have to remember that the information your reading is from a wiki, with such scholarly contributors as "Memememe27, Nightmare_baby, Spyke33, WSST, Slartibartfast, Touchdownpro, Lostone, Breeze-x and Nigth" So who knows where they're getting their rationales, esp. regarding his invisibility. I always just assumed that his dark skin/fur made it hard for him to be seen in the dark.

My favorite bit from that issue:
Oh well, maybe Wolverine still is a hyper-evolved wolverine and not a mutant.

I just assumed Marvel exercises editorial control and deletes anything non-canonical. All the entries seem to have a very consistent voice to them.

Wait, what? Was that ever the story?

Oh well, maybe Wolverine still is a hyper-evolved wolverine and not a mutant.•• At that point, yes. Chris and Dave came up with the idea that Wolverine was not a mutant, but one of the Hight Evolutionary's Ani-Men. It was this that caused the Sentinels' confusion as to what he was in issue 99. Before they got around to their big reveal, however, Archie Goodwin, unaware of their plans, used the same origin for the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman, so Chris and Dave changed their plans.* Later, another writer undid Archie's idea, and Jessica became merely a female human with powers -- thus losing one of the creepiest and, in my opinion, coolest origins Marvel had at the time. ___ * During my time on X-MEN, and also unrevealed and ultimately lost, Wolverine was Sabretooth's son. This was the reason for the Sentinels' confusion: Sabretooth was the mutant, and the mutation had bred true, so Logan was actually the first of a new species.

Wow, that's interesting. I had read about the Sabretooth relationship, but never the evolved wolverine story.
Haven't they reintroduced some connection with Sabretooth? Wolverine's background is so convoluted and retconned now it's hard to know what's what.

That's apparently what Spider-Woman's origin is, iirc.

What to, Brian? I understand the High Evolutionary still figures into her origin but not sure how.

That's apparently what Spider-Woman's origin is, iirc.•• In telling Spider-Woman's origin, Archie used the High Evolutionary, but had the character saying he had never before experimented with a creature of this particular type. This was Archie's way of saying the HE was using his science to evolve a spider, without ACTUALLY saying the HE was using his science to evolve a spider. This was to get around those in the audience who might find that TOO gross. One of those followed Archie as writer, and "revealed" that the "creature" upon whom the HE had not previously experiment was HUMAN. (Question of the Day: Would Marvel have the stones to create a character called "The High Evolutionary" in the current environment?)

And such a nicely-drawn sequence too (except for what seems to be a tangent involving NC's knuckles and Cyclops' leg). Something about that Cockrum/Grainger match-up that just works (in ways that Cockrum/Rubinstein doesn't).

You mean would they fear backlash from the religious right? That's a good question. Are comic books on the religious right's radar any more, or are their worlds so separated that never the twain shall meet?
